I think the biggest thing a tutor can do for a student is provide confidence. With confidence a student can approach a subject with understanding but also take risks and experiment and question the subject which leads to a better understanding and ultimately a passion for the topic. I share a passion for learning and try to pass that along to…

Giving Encouragement, motivation and patience. The most important thing that I can do as a tutor would be to make sure the kid understands everything that I teach. Each kid is different. I believe a tutor can make all the difference to a student struggling with their studies. School teaching can often be mechanical and impersonal; an environment where some students find it difficult to learn. I know first hand that teaching in smaller groups or one-on-one works is much more effective at learning hard to grasp concepts. The impact…

Being patient. A lot of teachers get frustrated when students do not understand concepts the way they teach them. It is important to teach every student in their own way and be patient with the teaching process. Otherwise a student's confidence and motivation to learn is harmed. Help them enjoy learning. The role of a tutor should be to engage the student and make the learning process fun, encouraging them to put more effort into their learning, consequently improving their results. As well as this, it is vital that a tutor guide the student to a solution rather than simply giving them the answer, allowing them to…

It is essential that the student feels comfortable learning, and as a tutor I think it is our job to achieve this. Not only should the student feel relaxed while in class, they should start to gain interest in what they are learning. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is act as a motivation for them to achieve their personal best. Tutoring is about building a relationship with the student based on trust and respect, making the student feel comfortable enough to ask questions, express their concerns and doubts, which was a key aspect for me when I was learning. A tutor needs to be patient and build a healthy learning curve. One of the most important things for a tutor is to be encouraging and positive. Negativity can lead to resentment towards a subject and deflect the student from making a genuine effort to learn. I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not teach them how to answer a specific question but to ensure they understand the logic behind the answering methodology. Inside TurrellaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Grace practised converting decimals to percentages and vice versa, and also worked on calculating mean, mode, median, and range.

For Year 10, Thomas focused on factorising quadratic expressions (both monic and non-monic) using the PSF method and solved equations by completing the square and applying the quadratic formula.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Grace analysed T.S. Eliot's poetry for Module B, refined essay structures for English Advanced, and practised unpacking essay questions to develop stronger thesis statements.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, one student hesitated to attempt harder algebra problems without textbook guidance—"needs more tries on more multiplication problems," a tutor noted—resulting in repeated practice of only familiar types.

For a senior student in Advanced English, feedback was often unaddressed between drafts; ideas discussed aloud were rarely incorporated into written essays, and her arguments leaned heavily on repeating class-taught terms rather than building with specific examples from texts.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner struggled to follow sentences line by line in reading tasks and skipped back-checking answers aloud, which made sequencing steps in worded math problems even more challenging during sessions.

Recent Achievements

A Turrella tutor noticed one Year 11 student who used to struggle with linking feedback to her writing now revises full essay drafts independently, making targeted changes for clarity and detail.

In Year 9 maths, a student who was hesitant with mean, mode, and median recently solved data questions without prompting and tackled converting decimals to percentages confidently.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who previously guessed at unfamiliar words has started pausing to sound them out before reading on—showing more patience and self-correction than before. Last session, she read the next chapter out loud with minimal help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Arncliffe Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Arncliffe West Infants School.
