Allow the student to discover rather than memorise - I understand that subjects such as Maths can feel overwhelming if given as rote learning. Instead, allowing the students to discover the content for themselves not only helps with retaining information, but can make learning fun! Build the student's confidence - There is no "stupid answer",…

Firstly, as a former student I believe the most important thing an english tutor can do is inspire and guide a student to learn on their own - as easy as it is to simply give away answers, actually getting someone to really put in a bit more effort is the challenging (and more rewarding) part. After that it just comes down to being able to connect…

I think the best thing an english tutor can do is make learning feel achievable. A big part of that is adapting to how each student learns, breaking things down in a way that makes sense to them, and giving them the confidence to tackle challenges on their own. Tutoring isn't just about getting through the syllabus, it's about showing students how…

I think the most important things an english tutor can do for a student are listening to them and paying attention to their needs. Students can be shy and may not make it abundantly clear what they need in any given moment, but there are usually signs, though they may be subtle. It is a tutor's job to monitor the student throughout a lesson and…

I believe that it is important for an english tutor to be so much more than what a teacher is. This involves building close bonds with their students to understand their academic needs so that tutoring sessions can be tailored specifically to the student. It is also extremely important for the tutor to always have a positive attitude and encourage…

I think for an english tutor it's being able to be contacted even after lesson hours. As for maths, it's very difficult to find solutions online and last minute stress before an exam is not good, so I think being available to be contacted and being flexible is the most important thing for a tutor. I like to make the classes interactive and fun to…

Inside VaucluseTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Charlie worked on improving confidence with fractions and decimals, using number lines to visualise equivalence.

For Year 9, Ava focused on algebraic inequalities and started exam preparation by reviewing budget questions from her syllabus.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Daniel concentrated on Module C English by planning and scaffolding a discursive piece while exploring the requirements of the discursive form in detail.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student in mathematics often avoided writing out steps when forming equations from worded problems, which made it harder to catch and correct misunderstandings—she kept struggling to turn story questions into equations, especially with fractions.

In Year 12 English, one student came to sessions without having done background readings or prepared notes; as a tutor noted, "if he isn't taking notes we end up going through the same content every week."

For another senior economics student, not submitting drafts or bringing questions in advance meant missed chances for feedback and slower progress toward exam readiness.

Recent Achievements

In a Vaucluse tutoring session, a Year 10 student who previously rushed through assignments is now pausing to plan her essay structure, resulting in clearer arguments and fewer rewrites.

Another high schooler, after struggling with metaphor use in creative writing, began actively incorporating feedback. His latest draft showed much sharper imagery and more precise language.

In primary maths, one student who used to hesitate with multi-digit subtraction now completes these problems confidently and has finally memorised the order of months, something she found confusing before.

Last week, she solved all ten practice questions without help or errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Watsons Bay Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kincoppal - Rose Bay School of the Sacred Heart.
