I believe a tutor should have a better understanding of student's perspectives. To elaborate, every student has a different perspective, and some will go in a very different direction tutor should understand the student's perspective before judging or correcting students. The tutor should ask questions and should bring up real-life examples so…

The most important thing a tutor can do would be to be patient enough to go over and over the topics until the student fully grasps all the concepts and not rushing through the topics. My strength would be to simplify and present matter in an interactive and easily understandable manner and make sure the students understand the finer concepts of…

The key for a good teaching skill is patience, which I am really confident to have. I am ready to explain the same concept to someone multiple times until the latter can step out of the room with the confidence that he/she has learnt something. Even that I am a student from the Science side my eagerness to learn more has triggered me in learning…

To inspire a student to be curious and develop a love of learning, as people are not often motivated to improve in areas in which they lack passion. The last family I had tutored had told me that after my sessions with their son, he had stopped crying every time he had to complete his school homework. From this experience, I have come to…

A tutor is not responsible for not passing the exam only, rather he needs to guide the student toward a better future for the student & a wellbeing for the society. I believe that "The teacher is the backbone of the nation". I can understand whether the student really understood or not. "Quality study" is more important than "Quantity study",…

I was taught that managing time and organising oneself can reduce the stress that most students face in VCE and lower levels of education thus improving grades and overall mental well being. To answer any queries first - then go ahead with the class concepts. It is so important that the student learns the foundations of their chosen subject and that these foundation principles are practiced and solid. Without these foundation, students will struggle to understand further and more complex problems, so it's up to the tutor to make sure…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are provide academic guidance, human connection, and consistency, and the combination of these factors can potentially reinvent a class, subject, or school more broadly for a young learner. Some of my greatest strengths are that I'm very energetic and patient. I lean on these qualities heavily…

The tutor should not only just teach but he should be able to build confidence in the student that he can solve any question that comes in the exam. Every student has the potential and it is the tutor who should try to help them reach that. In my opinion the main job of the tutor is to see the areas of weakness in his student. Once this is done…

I feel like encouraging them to have questions is really important. Without questions it\'s hard to know what they need help on, or what they need to improve on. So having the ability to make a good first impression, be kind and caring towards them, and able to make them feel like they can ask questions around a tutor and get help is extremely…

I believe a tutor/teacher should always strive to develop an interest about subject matter in the student. Inside Watsonia NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student focused on fraction addition and subtraction, using number lines to clarify concepts.

In Year 9, Alex worked through solving quadratic equations for x-intercepts and learned how to find the turning point of a parabola from its equation.

For Year 11, Sam tackled conditional probability as well as hypothesis testing, with recent lessons including discussion of real-world examples and practice interpreting statistical results.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, a student repeatedly avoided showing full working—"kept trying to switch around numbers simultaneously"—which made it hard to spot sign errors and slowed progress with negatives.

For VCE Methods (Year 11), another student juggled multiple textbooks but "struggled to connect what he knows in a coherent manner," leading to confusion when tackling exam questions.

A Year 7 student hesitated to attempt problem-solving tasks, often saying "I don't know" rather than explaining her thinking. This reluctance led to missed opportunities for feedback and growing confidence gaps during class discussions.

Recent Achievements

One Watsonia North tutor noticed Paul, a high school student, moving from needing step-by-step guidance with algebraic expressions to independently simplifying them and handling worded problems—a big shift from his earlier reliance on prompts.

Another win came when a Year 9 student, who used to avoid asking questions in class, began actively engaging during sessions and even asked for tougher trigonometry challenges after grasping the core concepts.

Meanwhile, Gracie in Year 5 showed new initiative by quickly working out percentages from fractions without hesitation—last month she'd pause at each question but now finishes her set with just minor corrections needed.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Watsonia Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Watsonia North Primary School.
