I believe every student has the potential to achieve their goals; sometimes, they simply need guidance, a listening ear, and clear explanations of challenging concepts. Above all, I believe patience is essential in helping students succeed. Not all students have the same learning abilities, attention span or language proficiencies - my biggest…

A tutor should create a safe and encouraging learning environment, identify gaps in understanding, and help students build strong foundations rather than just memorising answers. Most importantly, a tutor should build a student’s confidence and independent learning skills so they can succeed both inside and outside tutoring sessions. My main…

Being patient and understanding. Being a student is not easy. Understanding that is the first step. Sometimes, its not that the student is not able to understand a concept or subject, it just needs to be presented in a different manner. I am very patient and can go to the grass root level of each topic, thus laying a solid foundation for each…

I believe some of the most important things a tutor could do for a student is to make it an enjoying experience, with the ability to make learning fun. It’s important to ensure learning is student directed and that they are given the opportunity to decide what pace they would like to take, and have agency over their learning. I am patient,…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are understand the student as an individual, build their confidence, and help them develop the skills to become an independent learner. A good tutor should not simply provide answers, but guide students to understand the reasoning behind them and encourage them to think critically and solve…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give them the building blocks of understanding a new or tricky concept so then they can expand their knowledge and be able to work on it themselves, and give them the confidence to do this on their own. I think some of my strengths as a tutor is being able to explain concepts in more…

Making it feel like a friend teaching him/her, I remember of my high school days when my mates used to come to me to ask for a problem and I would solve it to them in such a way they would never forget, there were laughs included, stories included and of course the main knowledge. A tutor should be able to boost a student's confidence by providing them with the relevant knowledge needed to do well in their tests and exams. It is also important for the tutor to be compassionate with the students. I think it is extremely important for a tutor to be adaptable. Different students have differing learning styles and needs, and therefore, to help different students, you need to be able to tailor your tutoring to individualised approaches. Furthermore, rather than just giving the children the answers, as a tutor it is important to be able to help…

I would say a tutors' ultimate goal would be to get in sync with the way the student is taught in their respective schools, colleges or universities. Additionally, it is extremely important to make friends with the students, as this is necessary for proper engagement. I am not afraid to do some research when it comes to getting a student to…

Understanding the weak points and listening to their problems helps establish trust between the tutor and the student. This makes a tutor approachable. A tutor should never make their students feel that any question is dumb. Imparting the idea that all questions are good questions and students should never fear while asking anything is one of the…

Inside Watsonia NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student focused on fraction addition and subtraction, using number lines to clarify concepts.

In Year 9, Alex worked through solving quadratic equations for x-intercepts and learned how to find the turning point of a parabola from its equation.

For Year 11, Sam tackled conditional probability as well as hypothesis testing, with recent lessons including discussion of real-world examples and practice interpreting statistical results.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, a student repeatedly avoided showing full working—"kept trying to switch around numbers simultaneously"—which made it hard to spot sign errors and slowed progress with negatives.

For VCE Methods (Year 11), another student juggled multiple textbooks but "struggled to connect what he knows in a coherent manner," leading to confusion when tackling exam questions.

A Year 7 student hesitated to attempt problem-solving tasks, often saying "I don't know" rather than explaining her thinking. This reluctance led to missed opportunities for feedback and growing confidence gaps during class discussions.

Recent Achievements

One Watsonia North tutor noticed Paul, a high school student, moving from needing step-by-step guidance with algebraic expressions to independently simplifying them and handling worded problems—a big shift from his earlier reliance on prompts.

Another win came when a Year 9 student, who used to avoid asking questions in class, began actively engaging during sessions and even asked for tougher trigonometry challenges after grasping the core concepts.

Meanwhile, Gracie in Year 5 showed new initiative by quickly working out percentages from fractions without hesitation—last month she'd pause at each question but now finishes her set with just minor corrections needed.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Watsonia Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Watsonia North Primary School.
