As an educator the most important thing you can provide for a student are the tools and strategies that can help them to learn. Sometimes students simply need some support consolidating the things they are learning, and as an english tutor you can provide an avenue for students to take to decipher problems they're encountering in their work or…

I believe, more than anything else, that an english tutoring space should feel judgement free for a student. A student should not feel hesitant to ask questions or to clarify a concept. In fact, I believe it to be a good sign if a student is able to outright say that my explanation is not what they need or understand. Fostering such a safe and…

One of the foremost things an english tutor can do for a student is to develop their interest in something which they have disliked or taken for granted. Another thing a tutor can do is to help them not only with their grades, but also with guiding them towards their goals and be a mentor that would inspire them to be the best of themselves. I…

Besides from general knowledge of the subjects, understanding the strengths as well as weaknesses of the students is a must for personal tutors. We can develop the most effective way to teach if we are fully aware of these factors. Also, one of the most important things an english tutor can do is to be patient and considerate with their students.…

The primary role, I believe, for a teacher is to guide students to the right direction. With all the progress in information technology, educational content is readily available for literally anyone willing to learn something. The key role, for a modern-day teacher, I feel is to help students understand what they might be looking for and how they…

A skilled teacher may rekindle students' enthusiasm for learning by teaching in an engaging and practical manner. A tutor can lay a solid foundation for future courses by clearing the fundamentals of any subject. A good teacher can identify the student's weakest links and work with them to overcome them in a friendly manner. Teaching is a kind of…

It is important that tutors take measures to understand a student's strengths and weaknesses within a subject and to ensure their advice is suited to these capabilities. Tutoring should directly meet a student's needs, rather than implementing a one size fits all approach. A tutor should also supply a student with resources and advice that will…

The single most important aspect for an english tutor is to be able to keep the student's attention; losing their focus implicates the loss of any further progress in the topic at hand and their faith in how much you can help them as a mentor. Maintaining their concentration throughout the duration of the session, while tiring at times, pays off.…

Inside WhittingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Eliz worked on double-digit multiplication, long division, and was introduced to the concepts of HCF and LCM in maths, while also practising descriptive essay writing and expanding vocabulary in English.

Year 9 student Amber focused on algebraic equations involving negative numbers as well as quadratic expressions, including their introduction and review.

For Year 12, Marcus tackled advanced calculus skills such as differentiating with the chain rule and quotient rule, finding tangents and normals to curves, and anti-differentiation for areas under curves using integration.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student often forgot to bring her calculator and school books, which meant she couldn't always show progress on Pythagoras and trigonometry in sessions—"I haven't got my book again," she said, so practice was sometimes limited to what could be remembered.

In VCE Maths Methods, one student relied heavily on mental calculations even when a calculator was allowed, slowing down problem-solving with surds and Pythagoras.

A Year 3 learner hesitated during basic addition due to doubts about multiplication tables; this made it hard for her to move confidently into division tasks or keep up speed in classwork.

Recent Achievements

A Whittington tutor recently saw a Year 12 student become much more methodical with multiple-choice exam questions—she now carefully eliminates options using her knowledge of gradients and stationary points, rather than guessing as she used to.

In Year 10, another student who previously needed step-by-step help tackled simultaneous equations independently, applying the point of intersection technique confidently for the first time.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who once hesitated before answering maths problems is now noticeably quicker and applies tips straight away; last session, she finished all her subtraction questions without pausing for reassurance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Newcomb Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Whittington Primary School.
