A tutor should use as simple language as possible because using fancy language can make them loose interest as they won't know the words. A tutor should involve the students into the discussion so that they don't sleep off during the session. I have a good command over English Language which helps me connect with people so that I can go to the…

I think the most important thing is to help a student understand rather than just memorise. A good tutor should be patient, listen to the student, identify where they are struggling, and explain things in a way that suits them. It is also important to build their confidence and encourage them to solve problems independently, so that they gradually…

The most important thing is that the teacher makes the student realize the importance of learning all these things and how they could apply it to their real life. I think my strengths is that i see teaching as a performance rather than just a boring classroom setting. I believe that keeping the student engaged in the experience is crucial to…

I do NOT believe in spoon feeding. Most important is self - discipline and consistency. To built the habit of self-believing and working hard can be beneficial for a student its life! Learning is a life time process - so educating students to think out of the box, questioning, reasoning and working hard to find their ways are some key elements a…

A tutor’s mission is to help the student progress, enjoy and give his best. The most important thing is, more than methods or advice, giving confidence, which is the basis of good results. I’m patient, pleasant and persistent. I’m also very versatile and I can help students in many subjects. I also can create good bonds with students, so…

Not only teach them how to solve a problem, but also teach them resilience and perseverance through tutoring. I think that sometimes what stops a hard-working student from doing well is their lack of confidence towards themselves and fear of failure. I excel at breaking down complex problems into clear, manageable steps, and can adapt my…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to tailor the teaching content to the student's specific needs. Every student has unique strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles, and a one-size-fits-all approach often falls short. By customizing lessons, a tutor can address individual gaps in knowledge, reinforce areas of…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen to them and work with them, not at them. Tutoring for me is not just about regurgitating the same things as their classroom teacher, especially if it is a student who is struggling and the classroom approach is not working for them. I tutor in a way to make the student…

The most important thing a tutor can do is help a student become less dependent on the tutor over time. I do not think good tutoring means simply giving better answers; it means teaching students how to approach problems, ask better questions, and trust their own reasoning. A tutor should create a space where students feel comfortable making…

Listen to what the issue is and explain. I personally could do maths equations but if i didn’t know WHY something was in the formula it wouldn’t click and i’d be frustrated. First, it is essential that a tutor provides support tailored to that student's needs, learning process, and interests. Second, a tutor must approach sessions with patience and understanding, while avoiding negativity and behavior that may discourage their student. Overall, I think creating an environment where a student feels seen and heard by…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build not only a survey-able understanding of the topic, but hopefully a genuine interest and passion. This might not be realistic 100% of the time, but creating actual curiosity and interest beyond just completing work out of necessity can not only be highly rewarding for the student but will…

Instilling confidence is the most important thing I could do as a tutor for my student. Because my end goal is for them to believe in their ability to learn new material even without my guidance. Vesna, Newport

Inside Williamstown NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Sophia focused on algebraic expansion and factorisation, as well as solving equations using substitution.

Year 10 student Marcus worked through sketching straight line graphs and determining x- and y-intercepts from equations.

For Year 11, Emily tackled differentiation basics and applied these skills to maximum and minimum problems using worked examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Methods, a student was asked to finish all questions and send them by email, but the work remained incomplete—meaning gaps in problem-solving practice before assessments.

Another student in Year 8, as noted, "needs to do more problems about factorization," yet homework tasks weren't consistently finished or reviewed.

In Year 12 Specialist Maths, reliance on calculators surfaced: one lesson flagged that matrix calculations should be revised by hand to truly grasp underlying methods. These moments meant missed chances for feedback and left key skills underdeveloped ahead of major exams.

Recent Achievements

One Williamstown North tutor noticed a Year 11 student who had struggled with graphing trigonometric functions now confidently tackling both sine and cosine graphs, even volunteering to try tangent graphs without prompting.

Another high schooler, previously hesitant to ask for help, took the initiative this week to explain which parts of her homework she didn't understand—then worked through those sections until she could solve similar problems independently.

Meanwhile, in Year 4 maths, a student who once rushed through answers has started checking his calculations carefully and finished all ten workbook questions with no mistakes.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Newport Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Australian Islamic Centre College.
