The first and foremost is being patient. Not everyone can learn and understand concepts at the same pace, so patience is very important. Trying different learning styles when the initial learning style doesn't work is another one, because people don't learn the same way. I'm very good at breaking down complex concepts into clear,…

I believe the most important role of a tutor is to build a student's confidence while helping them develop a genuine understanding of the subject. A good tutor should create a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. It is also important to adapt teaching methods to suit each student's…

I attended many tutoring facilities during my time at school hence I have learnt the most valuable things a tutor can offer to a student is the patience and a change to be able to complete the work themselves, which giving them a few hints to get them on the right track. or if they're completely stuck to give a detailed explanation of the…

Instill a passion to learn the subject the tutor is helping out with and just generally help make the student feel competent when dealing with the subject. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be supportive and encouraging of the abilities they already have, while pushing them to learn and achieve as much as they can. I believe my biggest strengths to be my patience as a teacher, and my ability to tackle different problems from various angles. I find it better to spend time…

Give time, especially more before the exam. This is because that is the time when most of the problems about the subject come out. Also, the tutor needs to make sure that the student understood the topic. The tutor should be willing to explain the topic as many times as the students want to. I can adapt very quickly. I put myself in the shoes of…

Treat each student as an individual person. The same methods of tutoring might not apply on the other. Moreover patience is necessary. Tutors should maintain a pace comfortable for the student. Tutors should be humble enough to admit if they don't know few answers and should be able to research and provide the answers to the student. I learn…

I think that a good tutor should be able to inspire and motivate their student to do well. They should also be able to relate with the student and understand how they learn best so that they can teach them well. They must also have the skill set and knowledge to explain difficult concepts. Many tutors can simply explain content and answer questions, but I believe a great tutor inspires a passion for the field of study in the student. While supporting students to achieve their best grades is important to me, the best feeling as a tutor is seeing students who previously struggled and didn't enjoy a subject find things about it that…

Allowing the students to display the knowledge they have learnt is important to ensure that they indeed have learnt. My patience gives the…

A tutor must make sure that the student understand the course material, while making the class enjoyable at the same time. It is also essential for a tutor to give students practice questions / past paper questions to help them familiarize with the exam format, and having an answer discussion afterwards. I believe it is important to understand the student's weaknesses and strengths before starting to teach them. I have come across a common problem with students, which is that they often jump straight into trying to solve a problem without fully understanding the theory/basics first. Hence, I try to first help them understand the basics then go…

Vesna, Newport

Inside Williamstown NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Sophia focused on algebraic expansion and factorisation, as well as solving equations using substitution.

Year 10 student Marcus worked through sketching straight line graphs and determining x- and y-intercepts from equations.

For Year 11, Emily tackled differentiation basics and applied these skills to maximum and minimum problems using worked examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Methods, a student was asked to finish all questions and send them by email, but the work remained incomplete—meaning gaps in problem-solving practice before assessments.

Another student in Year 8, as noted, "needs to do more problems about factorization," yet homework tasks weren't consistently finished or reviewed.

In Year 12 Specialist Maths, reliance on calculators surfaced: one lesson flagged that matrix calculations should be revised by hand to truly grasp underlying methods. These moments meant missed chances for feedback and left key skills underdeveloped ahead of major exams.

Recent Achievements

One Williamstown North tutor noticed a Year 11 student who had struggled with graphing trigonometric functions now confidently tackling both sine and cosine graphs, even volunteering to try tangent graphs without prompting.

Another high schooler, previously hesitant to ask for help, took the initiative this week to explain which parts of her homework she didn't understand—then worked through those sections until she could solve similar problems independently.

Meanwhile, in Year 4 maths, a student who once rushed through answers has started checking his calculations carefully and finished all ten workbook questions with no mistakes.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Newport Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Australian Islamic Centre College.
