Breaking down complex concepts into small builidng blocks, such that the student can construct these ideas together, and reach an understanding of the concept. If the student is about to undertake exams, teaching exam techniques and proper preperation is quite an important thing a tutor can do as well. Since I recently completed the IB program,…

Always be a helping hand. In this sense, listen to the areas they think they have problems, observe the areas they may not catch onto easily and provide extra care and attention. Try to do your best to go above and beyond so that the student goes from just learning the subject to understanding and liking the subject more. I am a visual learner…

When it comes to tutoring, my approach is fairly straightforward. I want every student to genuinely understand the material rather than just memorise it long enough to get through a test. I keep lessons interactive, constantly checking in before moving on to more advanced topics so no one gets left behind or feels too awkward to speak up. A lot of…

Tutors bear the responsibility to provide students with clarity and a deep understanding of the subject matter. This involves simplifying complex concepts, breaking them down into digestible pieces, and guiding students through the learning process. A tutor's ability to pass knowledge in a way that resonates with students is essential. Every…

While helping friends with comp courses I’ve already done, I try to create an environment where they feel comfortable asking questions until they’re confident in the topic and i feel like thats one of the most important thing for a tutor. I believe the most important things are building genuine understanding rather than just memorisation, developing strong exam technique, and improving confidence. A good tutor should help students identify their specific weaknesses, work through them (for example using past papers to spot common mistakes) and ultimately make the student feel…

I think presence for one is important for a student. Tutors I have had in the past have always been in contact, checking in and supporting my efforts; I believe this can give a student a lot of confidence in their learning. Additionally, I believe that its important a tutor should never just give answers when teaching. In order for students to…

In middle school, I wasn’t a particularly bright student, and I needed the help of tutoring to catch up with my grade level. After trying various teachers and tutors, one of the most impactful things I learnt was how much of a leader a tutor needs to be. It’s all well if someone knows the subject material, but if they don’t understand how to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to actively pay attention to them. By paying attention to a student, a tutor can easily determine what the student needs support in and how the tutor can best provide it. Make them feel safe enough to say they don't understand. A lot of students already feel behind, and if they're scared of looking stupid they'll just nod along and fall further behind. So that comes first. Beyond that, I think the whole point is to build someone up to the point where they don't need you anymore — every session should leave them a…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student is patience. A tutor should get to understand, listen and work along with the students at their own pace without overwhelming them. Local Reviews

Rosie is tutoring my child in year 7 maths and has built up a great rapport with her. Through my observations I can see that Rosie has a strong understanding of maths and is able to explain ideas and concepts very easily. She has a lot of patience and always checks my daughters understanding and offers alternative explanations where needed. Rosie is always punctual, friendly and polite and I am very happy with the progress that has been made to date.

Inside ZetlandTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student William worked on correcting homework covering simple interest and surds, along with catching up missed class content.

For Year 9, revision with Ben focused on dividing and multiplying fractions as well as tackling negative and fractional indices in surds.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Xavier practised converting remainders into decimals, solved word problems, and labelled different types of triangles using diagrams to support understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student left several steps unwritten when tackling algebraic equations, as one tutor noted: "he tried to do everything in his head instead of writing it down." This led to confusion over signs and made errors harder to spot.

In Year 11, incomplete homework meant that basic perfect square practice was missed, so extra time had to be spent revisiting foundational rules rather than progressing.

Meanwhile, a primary student working on division often forgot her materials at home, causing delays while searching for worksheets and slowing the start of each session.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Zetland noted that William, a Year 10 student, has started attempting every maths question instead of skipping the tough ones—a real shift from earlier sessions when he'd often give up if stuck.

In Year 11, after struggling with surd problems last term, he was able to recall the steps and solve similar questions independently this week, using his own notes for support.

Meanwhile, Elliott (Year 5) used to stay quiet during lessons but now openly talks through his reasoning on each English question and even asks for extra examples when something feels tricky. Last session, he wrote down all his ideas without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Green Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Green Square Public School.
