I believe being a good role model for a student is the most important thing a tutor can do. When a tutor serves as a positive role model, they provide students with an example to embrace and emulate. A tutor can influence a student's behavior, mindset, and work ethic through their actions and the way they present themselves. Throughout my diverse…

I believe the most important things are building genuine understanding rather than just memorisation, developing strong exam technique, and improving confidence. A good tutor should help students identify their specific weaknesses, work through them (for example using past papers to spot common mistakes) and ultimately make the student feel…

To make a student truly care about learning the topic at hand. Once a student understands the value in what they are learning, their inherent motivation does more to help them than any tutor ever could. Pairing that with some patience and guidance, and the student will thrive. I am extremely patient, and prepared to take as much time as the…

It is not about the result it is how you get there. Although I do believe a tutor should boost the student's grades in school, I also strongly believe that a tutor must teach in a way that a student understands and enjoys. I would make sure my student understands the concept while enjoying what he is doing. I want to ignite the passion I have in…

Build their confidence. Knowledge is important, but if a student leaves still thinking they're just bad at math or whatever subject, I've failed. The most important thing is helping them realize they're capable - that struggling doesn't mean failing, it means learning. I also think creating a comfortable space matters. Students need to feel safe…

The most important thing a teacher can do for a student is clarifying any and all doubts that a student may have and patiently teaching the student until he/she understands the concept as well as the tutor. I believe my greatest strength as a tutor is having the patience to teach someone younger than myself and the willingness to teach them the…

The most important thing a tutor can do is build a student’s self-efficacy by transforming the way they approach challenges. Rather than just providing answers, a tutor should demystify the struggle of learning, showing the student that getting stuck is a natural part of the problem-solving process rather than a sign of failure. By moving away…

Always be a helping hand. In this sense, listen to the areas they think they have problems, observe the areas they may not catch onto easily and provide extra care and attention. Try to do your best to go above and beyond so that the student goes from just learning the subject to understanding and liking the subject more. I am a visual learner…

A tutor should be able to immediately help a student with their issues, constructing quick and easy-to-digest lessons around their desired topics, and tailoring the lesson to the student's individual strengths and weaknesses. Aside from recently having completed the courses that I would be tutoring, I can also simplify many complex topics into…

Be Patient. I think as a tutor you have to understand that people learn and process things differently. There are students that understand really fast and there are students that do that really slow. Ultimately, you have to be patient and willing to imbibe the knowledge in them. I think as a person and as someone who’s worked in various fields…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be able to adapt their teaching style for them. The most important and basic task of a tutor is to effectively deliver and teach the material requested by the student beforehand. Local Reviews

Rosie is tutoring my child in year 7 maths and has built up a great rapport with her. Through my observations I can see that Rosie has a strong understanding of maths and is able to explain ideas and concepts very easily. She has a lot of patience and always checks my daughters understanding and offers alternative explanations where needed. Rosie is always punctual, friendly and polite and I am very happy with the progress that has been made to date.

Inside ZetlandTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student William worked on correcting homework covering simple interest and surds, along with catching up missed class content.

For Year 9, revision with Ben focused on dividing and multiplying fractions as well as tackling negative and fractional indices in surds.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Xavier practised converting remainders into decimals, solved word problems, and labelled different types of triangles using diagrams to support understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student left several steps unwritten when tackling algebraic equations, as one tutor noted: "he tried to do everything in his head instead of writing it down." This led to confusion over signs and made errors harder to spot.

In Year 11, incomplete homework meant that basic perfect square practice was missed, so extra time had to be spent revisiting foundational rules rather than progressing.

Meanwhile, a primary student working on division often forgot her materials at home, causing delays while searching for worksheets and slowing the start of each session.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Zetland noted that William, a Year 10 student, has started attempting every maths question instead of skipping the tough ones—a real shift from earlier sessions when he'd often give up if stuck.

In Year 11, after struggling with surd problems last term, he was able to recall the steps and solve similar questions independently this week, using his own notes for support.

Meanwhile, Elliott (Year 5) used to stay quiet during lessons but now openly talks through his reasoning on each English question and even asks for extra examples when something feels tricky. Last session, he wrote down all his ideas without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Green Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Green Square Public School.
