I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is help a student become confident and independent in their learning. Rather than simply giving them answers, a tutor should help them understand the reasoning behind concepts and develop strategies they can use on their own. It is also important to be patient, recognise each student’s…

Then, my objective became to teach students how to learn properly: my aim was to assist them in finding their own way of studying and learning. In my opinion, a tutor's prime responsibility is to make the learner comfortable and ready for learning. I strongly believe that teaching doesn't always means learning is taking place. 1. Convey to the student that if they are finding a subject hard, it is natural. They just haven't found a way that works for them and we are willing to explore that 2. A tutor should understand their student's potential and work accordingly and find ways of teaching that work for them 3. Be patient with a student and have empathy and give them…

A good tutor also creates a supportive and structured environment, sets clear expectations,…

Super easy to get going and my daughter loves working with her tutor.
Tanya Connor, Abbotsford

Inside AbbotsfordTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Daniel focused on multiplying and dividing fractions as well as mastering times tables from 2 to 10 through targeted worksheets.

For Year 8, Emily worked through solving and simplifying algebraic equations, including factorisation, using step-by-step examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student James reviewed quadratic functions by practising graphing techniques and applying the quadratic formula to solve a range of problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths Methods, one student often skipped crucial steps when multiplying inequalities by negatives, leading to persistent sign errors—"she needs to practice translating English sentences into equations," a tutor noted.

For a Year 9 student, rushing through algebraic fractions without careful layout caused repeated mistakes and slowed progress.

In Year 10 English, a student struggled with structuring essays logically; missing deadlines and incomplete homework compounded this issue.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, reliance on memorisation without practicing tables (7–9) meant slow recall during timed drills, leaving her frustrated as others finished ahead.

Recent Achievements

One Abbotsford tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who used to leave assignments unfinished but now self-assigns tasks before assessments and works through them independently.

In English, a Year 12 student has become much more confident at forming positions and backing them up with clear reasoning—she recently articulated how Rear Window both depicts and subverts 1950s gender roles, something she'd hesitated to discuss before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who previously made frequent mistakes in times tables just completed all the tricky ones—including the 13s and 14s—with barely any errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Collingwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sophia Mundi Steiner School.
