Aside from helping them get better academically, I think helping the student feel seen and understood when explaining an idea that may be challenging to them is important. It is important for their self esteem, and helping them feel more motivated to get better at what they're studying. Building a rapport with them is just as important as teaching…

First of all, a tutor needs to build the teacher-student relationship in order to build trust and comfort in the learning space. A tutor should never see a student as weak, but rather, should see a student as progressive. A tutor should encourage and properly guide the student to better comprehend concepts in the subject being taught. A tutor…

I think an essential thing a tutor can do for their student is be empathetic! Often, for teachers, its hard to understand what students are feeling, since school and lifestyle has changed from the time they were students to now (in a global pandemic). Therefore, being an tutor who displays empathy about understanding what its like being a student…

I believe that teaching is not about pumping a student with exam papers or to make them memorise the answers and get good grades, for my satisfaction. But about really making sure the student understands a concept, so that they have a strong foundation and can apply to it many different question styles. This will actively stimulate creativity and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them not just what to think, but how to think. Its about providing them with strategies to find their own answers. After teaching a specific section, it is essential to question the student on the respective topics to understand whether the student understood the basic concept of the section I believe every student has a different capacity. Gina, Aberfoyle Park

Inside Aberfoyle ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Emily worked on building confidence with multiplication and division, as well as understanding decimals through hands-on examples.

In Year 9, Sam focused on solving linear equations and was introduced to the basics of trigonometry using right-angled triangle diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Grace tackled derivatives from first principles and explored unit circle trigonometry, practising both algebraic methods and sketching relevant graphs.

Recent Challenges

Several students across Years 4 to 12 faced process obstacles that affected their progress.

For example, a Year 8 student's algebra solutions were hard to follow due to messy working and "writing out of order," making errors harder to spot and fix.

In Year 11 Specialist Maths, one student did not ask for extra paper during a test after running out of space—"she kept writing cramped answers in the margin," which led to incomplete responses.

Another, in Year 5, regularly forgot to bring maths materials, causing lost time at lesson start.

When tackling derivatives in Year 12 Methods, skipping intermediate steps meant confusion over which variables had been substituted.

Recent Achievements

One Aberfoyle Park tutor noticed a big change with a Year 10 student who used to rush through linear equations but now takes time to write out each step, leading to far fewer mistakes.

In a recent Year 12 session, a student who previously hesitated to ask for help started openly talking through problems aloud, which helped clarify their understanding of polynomial derivatives and unit circle diagrams.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who struggled with short division has begun using multiples of ten confidently when dividing larger numbers—something they avoided before—and managed to finish independently an entire worksheet.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Aberfoyle Park (The Hub) Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Aberfoyle Hub Primary School.
