I believe the most important thing is to explain in a way that the student understands. For example, with some of my students I would use a lot of analogies to help them get an initial grasp of a concept, whereas with others I will explain the underlying principles of a topic in great detail, as thats what helps that specific student understand a…

Tutors fill a different role than teachers and parents, and that puts them in a unique position to support students. Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. When a tutor…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is by understanding the student first on what its weakness or strengths lies on. Then deliver theories based on the insight gained. One of the biggest skill a tutor can have is making the lessons engaging and fun to be a part of it. What I do is engage the students through the lesson by using…

The most important thing that a tutor must do is form a genuine connection with the student based on trust and integrity. This can be achieved through humour, motivation and sharing likes/dislikes. This allows for long-term teaching because of a comfortable environment allowing the student to perform to the best of their ability. My questioning…

The most crucial role of a tutor is to inspire and empower students. It's not just about imparting knowledge; it's about instilling confidence. Building a supportive, mentor-like relationship is vital. When students feel comfortable and valued, their learning potential soars. A tutor should adapt their teaching style to match the student's unique…

I believe a tutor can impact student's lives by providing the foundation he needs for further studies. A student with a poor concept might some how pass but he will struggle in the future, or looses interest in that subject. Hence a tutor can strengthen that foundation, at the same time be a source of motivation and a be a big brother. My main…

As a tutor, it is important to be communicative with the students where ideas and thought process can be discussed so that learning can be improved. What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student are build self-confidence, without this they will not believe in themselves and their ability, and therefore will not make the improvements they are capable of, inspire them to create their own goals, both long-term and short term, big and small, and of course, help…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is be supportive. All behaviour is belief driven, if a tutor convinces a pupil that he can do it, he will. I believe I am calm, patient, persevering, and supportive. Especially when it comes to perseverance, I will not be deterred if a student doesn't originally understand my explanations as, if I…

A tutor should identify the students' areas of weakness and focus on helping the students gain knowledge in these areas rather than teaching the student what they already know. A tutor's job is to fuel their students' love for learning, make them independent, and lend them a hand when it is needed. Inside Alfords PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alex revised multiplication and division strategies, then practiced identifying and measuring angles.

For Year 8, Mia worked on converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages using visual examples, while also revisiting earlier topics for a topic test.

In Year 10, Josh tackled advanced algebraic equations alongside trigonometry problems to prepare for his upcoming exam.

Recent Challenges

Across Years 7–12, lesson notes repeatedly showed that revision habits need strengthening—particularly independent review between sessions.

For example, in Year 8 algebra, one student was reminded to "practice by himself to remember for tests," but had not attempted problems outside lessons, so key fraction simplifications were quickly forgotten.

In Year 10 trigonometry, another focused only on familiar SOH CAH TOA questions; "needs to go practice over things himself… and memorising SOH CAH TOA," a tutor noted, as exam-style variations remained unattempted. This led to hesitation when tackling anything beyond the standard drills during mock exams.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Alfords Point noticed a big change with Max, a Year 10 student who had struggled with trigonometry and algebra—by the end of their session, he solved every question but also tackled extra problems on his own without prompting.

In another high school session, one student went from missing key exam questions to explaining exactly where mistakes happened and how to fix them, showing new self-awareness about learning.

For a younger primary student, a real shift came when she began answering questions out loud after usually waiting for hints; by the last exercise, she volunteered her answers first.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Menai Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Alfords Point Public School.
