I think if I was a student I would want my tutor to be less intimidating and focus more on building my confidence, not only in the topics that is being but also to participate and join in the learning experience whether my answers are right or wrong. My strength as a tutor would be the breaking down of complex topics using example and relatable…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide support and help them develop independence in their learning. A tutor should guide students to understand concepts by encouraging them to think critically and problem-solve on their own. It is also important to help students enjoy learning and develop the resilience to…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make a student feel understood and supported, not judged. Learning can be really challenging, especially when you’re already dealing with pressure, self doubt, or even language barriers. In the end, what matters most is that a tutor helps a student find confidence in their own ability to learn…

Be empathetic and put yourself in the shoes of the student whole teaching them, to understand how they view the subject at hand and how you can help them understand it better. It's also important to be well prepared and to be willing to listen to the student's ideas and concerns and open to research anything needed in more depth to help the…

The tutor should understand his subject matter to be able to deliver complicated ideas to the students simply and concisely. If the tutor cannot do so, he should further his knowledge of that subject matter. I love to use descriptive and outside the box methods to understand mathematical concepts. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to teach a student how to pursue their own studies, that is, if I can teach a student how to study without the need for a tutor, that's worth more than tutoring them the whole year and it will serve them well for the rest of their life. An excellent tutor will keep their students motivated and…

Most important thing for any tutor is to understand their student well. Teaching students HOW to learn and effective methods for learning, instead of just showing students the course material which they have likely already seen in class. Of course, refreshing core concepts is key to building a strong foundation, but tutors should aim to extend their students, to go further than what is required. Also, they should have…

I believe understanding the calibre of the student and providing constant motivation is something a tutor must importantly do for a student because quite often the individuality of a student gets lost in class and so the tutor needs to grab onto that individuality of the student so that they can not just progress ahead academically but also stand…

Local Reviews

I loved our Scott! He was perfect for our year 5!
Lindsey, Alfred Cove

Inside Alfred CoveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Olivia reviewed perimeter, area, and surface area from her recent measurement test, then practised Venn diagrams and two-way tables to prepare for a probability assessment.

Year 9 student Paige focused on multiplying and dividing decimals and worked through estimation strategies using real numbers, identifying areas for improvement with targeted examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Michael tackled ratios, rates, and percentages—solving financial mathematics problems involving simple interest and applying ratio reasoning in context.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, he relied heavily on a calculator for fraction questions, leading to missed practice with manual calculations and more errors when calculators weren't allowed.

A Year 11 student in algebra avoided writing out working steps—as noted, blank lines hid sign mistakes in equations—making it difficult to spot patterns or correct errors later.

In English (Year 5), incomplete homework meant less progress building vocabulary and academic writing skills.

One Year 9 student's lesson notes showed notetaking was patchy, resulting in confusion during topic reviews.

Each of these habits slowed confidence and left gaps before assessments.

Recent Achievements

One Alfred Cove tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated with significant figures now tackling worded scientific notation problems independently, even rounding correctly to two and three significant figures.

In a recent high school maths session, another student who once struggled with choosing the right formula for simple interest was able to identify which calculation method fit each question type and explain her reasoning aloud.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner—who used to stay quiet during lessons—has begun verbalising his thinking while working through multi-digit subtraction, allowing the tutor to address misunderstandings on the spot.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as AH Bracks Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Melville Primary School.
