A tutor should provide what a teacher can't. There is a reason that students seek tutoring, and it is therefore a chemistry tutor's role to meet their needs. I believe patience is the most important thing. Not everyone thinks the same, and its important for a tutor to understand this, and to move at a pace that suits the student, whilst also…

I know what its like to feel lost and anxious about academics. I have been demoted to the bottom class, twice in my school years and it would be selfish of me not to share how I overcame my own insecurities with others on a similar path. Patience, I don't like to rush things, everything needs its time grow and bear fruit. Communication, I speak…

the most important thing for a chemistry tutor is to be able to listen to their students to truly understand their wants and needs, in order to help them achieve their goals the best way they can. I am able to adapt to different learning styles, teaching the students in the manner that appears best to them. I am good at listening to the students…

In my opinion, patience is the most important. Tutor is different from a teacher because as a chemistry tutor, it allows us more time to explain, and allows students more time to ask. Only if I show patience, my students are not afraid to keep asking. I think this is the whole point of tutoring. I grow up in an asian city so I had a lot of…

To build intrinsic motivation. How much they value their success is up to them but their enjoyment of studying as well as how effective they are at studying are things that I can affect. This can ensure that they see long term success. I try to be as patient as possible; I'm someone who takes longer to process some concepts and I so I know how…

The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is to equip the student with the skills to find answers and explore the subject on their own. Whenever my students ask me questions outside of the syllabus, I involve them in the process of looking up papers and interpreting scientific language. I am able to come up with analogies to help students…

I think the most important thing is for the student to truly understand what hes actually doing in the subject. I can make the student not only competent, but also comfortable and confident in a certain topic. I understand how stressful hard subjects can be. I want to take away the feeling of fear when students enter a class they think they're not good in. Another thing is teaching a student to be an autodidact. I was fortunate enough to know this tactic…

I believe explaining a concept in such a way that the student understands it intuitively and can thus use that understanding to solve different problems, rather than simply rote-learning a series of facts, is an incredibly important part of being a chemistry tutor. The tutor should be adding to a student's toolkit such that they can solve a…

A tutor should make the student feel capable by building understanding, not just giving answers. The most important thing is to teach students how to think and solve problems independently, while also giving them confidence and structure. A good tutor also creates a supportive environment where students feel comfortable, respected, and motivated…

I think the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is help students gain clarity in the concepts they don't understand well from school. And practice is key. And in math I think it's important as a tutor to make math fun for students, and help them understand formulas and equations in a fun, comprehensive and easy way rather than just to…

I would say the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is helping them grow as individuals, and help them find a love for learning - a strong passion for the academic studies. A tutor needs to also serve as a good role model for the students, and be a person the student can trust to help them improve their grades. I would say…

Above all else, I believe a chemistry tutor should prioritise student wellbeing. Beyond academic achievement, it's essential to foster a sense of belonging, confidence and self-worth in each student. This involves attentive listening, emotional support, and creating a safe, judgement-free space. Additionally, empowering students to take ownership…

Lindsey, Alfred Cove

Inside Alfred CoveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Olivia reviewed perimeter, area, and surface area from her recent measurement test, then practised Venn diagrams and two-way tables to prepare for a probability assessment.

Year 9 student Paige focused on multiplying and dividing decimals and worked through estimation strategies using real numbers, identifying areas for improvement with targeted examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Michael tackled ratios, rates, and percentages—solving financial mathematics problems involving simple interest and applying ratio reasoning in context.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, he relied heavily on a calculator for fraction questions, leading to missed practice with manual calculations and more errors when calculators weren't allowed.

A Year 11 student in algebra avoided writing out working steps—as noted, blank lines hid sign mistakes in equations—making it difficult to spot patterns or correct errors later.

In English (Year 5), incomplete homework meant less progress building vocabulary and academic writing skills.

One Year 9 student's lesson notes showed notetaking was patchy, resulting in confusion during topic reviews.

Each of these habits slowed confidence and left gaps before assessments.

Recent Achievements

One Alfred Cove tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated with significant figures now tackling worded scientific notation problems independently, even rounding correctly to two and three significant figures.

In a recent high school maths session, another student who once struggled with choosing the right formula for simple interest was able to identify which calculation method fit each question type and explain her reasoning aloud.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner—who used to stay quiet during lessons—has begun verbalising his thinking while working through multi-digit subtraction, allowing the tutor to address misunderstandings on the spot.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as AH Bracks Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Melville Primary School.
