The most important thing is to keep calm and listen to them. As a tutor you can never lose your calm irrespective of how many times your student makes the same mistake. You might have to repeat yourself hundreds of times, but that shouldn't be a problem. It is important to understand their questions and respond to them accordingly. It is also…

This requires the tutor to build on what the student already knows. -To break difficult concepts/ problems down into more simple parts, to facilitate easier learning for the student. To explain difficult concepts into layman's terms. -To help…

I think the most important goal as a tutor is to create a positive environment for a student. Being patient, understanding and maintaining a positive attitude has a wide array of benefits, including learning. Second to this is the ability to help a student gain an instinctive understanding of the concept manner. More than just helping with…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel supported and understood. Ceating a space where the student feels safe to ask questions and make mistakes is important. A good tutor should listen and adapt their approach based on the student’s needs. Sometimes students already have the ability but they just need someone…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is foster a student’s confidence and independence in learning. While explaining concepts is important, my goal is to empower students to think critically, ask questions and develop their own problem-solving strategies that work for them. When students begin to trust in their own abilities they…

Tutors can be a reason to guide the students in the right direction. Sometimes, a student might need a tiny little nudge to get them on track and tutors can be or are the right persons for that. A tutor can be a friend guiding the student in every obstacle they come across. A tutor can also be a role model for the students by creating a long…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do is to help the student enjoy what he/she is studying. Having compassion. Being proficient in a subject does not guarantee that the student will understand as deeply as the tutor. Sometimes, techniques won't work, or the student may have problems outside of academics. Being compassionate will outweigh any other things that a tutor can do at the end of the day. I am able to compartmentalize well, and…

I think that being patient and empathetic are two of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Most of these students who are being tutored most likely are struggling with the subject/s they are being tutored in. Hence I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them find aspects of the subject which they enjoy and…

I believe that it is paramount for a tutor to understand that every student learns differently and therefore may need a different approach to studying to achieve their goals. A tutor should ask their student how they learn best and implement this feedback into their approach to tutoring. Similarly, it is important to understand that each student…

Inside ArmadaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 Dishita focused on interpreting time-series data, including mean-smoothing and deseasonalisation techniques, and practiced applying the 68-95-99.7 rule for normal distributions using exam questions.

Year 11 Emily worked through scatterplots and transformations in statistics, consolidating skills by tackling residuals and regression problems from recent school assessments.

Meanwhile, Year 10 Josh revised financial mathematics concepts such as compound interest calculations and explored surface area and volume of composite shapes through targeted textbook exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3–4, one student often attempted times tables and complex multiplication mentally rather than writing out working, which led to confusion and missed steps—she sometimes forgets to add zeros when moving to the next line.

Notably, in VCE Maths (Year 12), a different student relied on reading exam questions quickly without highlighting key information or taking structured notes. As noted: Needs to read the question carefully. Use a sheet of paper to track reading.

In both cases, skipping systematic written processes made it harder to spot errors and slowed progress during challenging tasks or under exam conditions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Armadale recently saw Dishita, a Year 12 student, begin using the 'talk-aloud' strategy to break down complex standardised score questions—something she previously found daunting. She's now highlighting key details in exam problems and independently choosing the right formulas.

Meanwhile, Rose (Year 6) has moved from needing step-by-step support with long division to confidently solving multi-digit problems and tackling time conversion questions with little prompting.

For a younger learner, Jacob is no longer relying solely on his number line for single-digit addition; he now attempts mental calculations first and checks his work before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Malvern Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like The King David School - The Rebecca Magid Centre.
