It is a necessity for a tutor to establish rapport with their students. As a proponent of a theory in rapport for learners, it is important that the student and teacher must sense each other, sync in their teaching and learning process and experience an affirming positive experience while educating. I am very creative in teaching my students. I…

To explain things in such a way as if they aren't familiar with the concept. This way they are able to understand what they are doing and why it is done in such a way. I believe understanding the concept is the most important way to be able to apply it to questions. It also provides a good foundation to attempt higher order questions with critical…

I believe a tutor should be able to clearly communicate the fundamentals of a subject in simple terms to ensure the student can build on their knowledge. I believe this also increases the chances that the student will actually want to learn and improve more than they did before. Understanding any problems the student is facing with subject is also…

As someone who has had tutors in the past; I can say with confidence that a tutor allows the student to catch up on what they didn’t understand in school the first time. Some topics are just harder than others.Unfortunately, most schools won’t slow down for each individual student just because they’re having a hard time. A tutor can enable a…

A tutor must be able to deliver the contents of a subject clearly and be receptive to all doubts and concerns a student may have without being judgemental. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is focus on that student, listen to what they want and then create a personalised lesson just for them. The major difference between a class and a tutor is how the tutor is able to focus on the one student, and maximising this chance and truly listening to the student and helping them…

From my experience, the desire to learn and succeed must come from within, but once that feeling is there it is the tutor's responsibility to cultivate and grow this passion and to translate it into continuous improvement. Hence, one of the most important things that a tutor can do is understand the student's needs and to meet those needs in a…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen and understand the student's learning style and being able to adapt accordingly. Students often learn at a different pace from each other and a tutor should understand when to slow down, when to speed up, or when to adjust the teaching style to suit the student's learning…

In my opinion, a tutor has to be able to communicate effectively with a student. There is a clear difference between having knowledge and actually being able to teach a particular field of study. It is absolutely vital that a tutor speaks to a student in a way that is easily understood by the student but at the same time also engaging. This way of…

I believe that a tutor should be able to impart confidence and self sufficiency into the student. They would…

I think it's to guide the student and improve their understanding and engagement at school. From a practical standpoint, a tutor should help a student improve their marks but more importantly, help the student understand the fundamental concepts behind everything. A tutor should teach to a student's strengths and encourage their student to work…

I would find that the ability to diversify how you communicate with a range of students is highly important. This is due to the differing ways that each student learns and providing an individualised structure will benefit their learning capability. I find that a student who fails to connect with a tutor will not see an improvement in their grades…

Inside BatemanTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Savannah focused on understanding how fractions and decimals interact with multiplication and division, as well as reviewing her recent NAPLAN practice test from school.

In Year 8, Charlie worked through homework problems on fractions, percentages, and decimals, and also tackled negative numbers alongside a quick review of time calculations.

For Year 10, Matteo concentrated on linear lines with simultaneous equations, identifying areas he found challenging for targeted support during the session.

Recent Challenges

During recent Year 9 Maths sessions, Savannah has not been using revision materials given and needs to improve on her time management so she doesn't feel rushed before due dates.

This showed up when preparing for assessment tasks—uncertainty about which topics to focus on led to last-minute study.

In Year 11, one student's test performance was limited by time management: "time management in exams" was flagged as an area needing attention, with questions left unfinished.

A Year 7 student became frustrated and avoided completing NAPLAN practice tests; feeling overwhelmed by balancing multiple subjects contributed to this pattern.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Bateman noticed Savannah, a Year 7 student, recently stopped relying on her multiplication chart and now works through problems independently—just last week, she faced a full page of questions that initially felt overwhelming but finished them quickly with only minor errors after a bit of encouragement.

In Year 10, Matteo moved from needing step-by-step guidance to tackling linear equations solo using simultaneous methods without help; he also started suggesting how much homework would be manageable for him.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student showed new initiative by explaining where she went wrong in her last exam and what strategies she'll use to fix those areas next time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bull Creek Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Corpus Christi College.
