I think that it's really important to be a good listener so that you can use feedback from students to improve your teaching. Not everyone learns in the same way so it's really important to work with each student to find the learning tehniques that work best for them. It's also important to recognise that each student could prefer different…

Teach students HOW to learn in future. Give them techniques to implement into their everyday school routine that will, in the long run, benefit their understanding. I believe it is equally important to really listen to students properly. As someone who has received tutoring before, when your tutor misinterprets you, it is difficult to get to the…

It depends a little bit on age but the older they get the more important confidence is going to be and giving the students confidence is the most important job. I believe the most important thing for a tutor to do is to keep the student engaged. Often students in tutoring are behind in work because they lose focus in a classroom or simply find it boring. Being able to hone a student's attention to the work will dramatically improve their chances of success. I can often work with different learning styles,…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to support them though their learning and to be a set of ears which a struggling student can go to and tell their problems without fear of judgement. Relating to my strengths as a tutor, I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is giving a thorough and concise explanation of every single concept to a student, in a way that isn't only just memorizing, but also using their own logic and thought process to understand and learn on their own as they go. This must all be applied in an…

Inside BeckenhamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jack practised addition and subtraction of hundreds, as well as solving basic word problems involving carrying numbers.

Year 9 student Sarah focused on factorisation and graphing quadratics, including finding the roots and sketching graphs by hand.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lucas worked through algebraic expansion and factorisation using different methods, with extra attention given to tackling challenging test-style questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, calculator input errors and missed negative signs ("Needs to ensure the input in the calculator is correct") led to avoidable mistakes on algebra questions—one tutor noted, "she lost marks when a negative sign was overlooked."

For a Year 11 English student, over-reliance on copying text instead of paraphrasing limited essay clarity and structure.

In Year 4, messy handwriting and writing outside given spaces made it difficult for teachers to follow working.

A Year 6 student sometimes avoided sounding out unfamiliar words, skipping them during reading tasks. This left gaps in understanding and confidence mid-lesson.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Beckenham recently noticed a Year 10 student who had previously hesitated to express original ideas now starting to write answers in their own words, moving away from simply copying the text.

In a high school maths session, another student who often struggled with logical problem-solving managed to structure their answers clearly after just some guided hints.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who used to need frequent reminders about spelling has begun spelling out words independently when shown once and can now name various places without any prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cannington Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Gibbs Street Primary School.
