Making sure a person has a full understanding of a subject is very important. At school the content is memorised instead of understood, which leads to weak foundation. As an english tutor, it is important that your student comprehends all aspects if the subject and is confident in applying their knowledge and skills I am patient with the student…

The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to be able to listen and understand from the students perspective, so that they are able to teach them in the manner that is best for the student. At the end of the day, if the student is able to gain the satisfaction of conquering even the smallest of concepts with the help of…

I believe the most important asset an english tutor can have is the ability to listen. Student's often come to tutors with different intentions in mind, some to extend their current knowledge and accelerate themselves, while others intend to re-establish their foundations. It is crucial that the tutor listens to and understands the students needs…

To help the student love learning and feel like they genuinely want to continue their education because they want to and not because they feel forced by any social pressures. Also to help them figure out what kind of field they would like to pursue as a career they will enjoy. I believe one of my greatest strengths is breaking down and…

A tutor is there both to teach content and to improve a student's study habits. Seeking advice from teachers, peers, and my past tutor, I have developed helpful study skills and I recognise inefficient habits. I have gained an appreciation for tuning study practices to the individual for optimal results. Learning to work with my ADHD has…

A tutor should create a supportive learning environment, explain concepts clearly, and encourage independent thinking so the student becomes confident and capable on their own. I’m patient, a good listener, and able to explain concepts in different ways to suit each student’s learning…

Teach. Not just the lesson at hand, and not just the syllabus, but to teach generally, and to teach widely. I have an incredibly wide knowledge set, dabbling in English, mathematics, language in general (including quite a bit of Latin), history, science, and philosophy most of all; but these aren't truly separate fields, given how thoroughly they…

I believe that one of the most important things is recognising students' needs and personalising their experience such that it is most beneficial for them. It is important to be empathetic and open-minded to a range of learning styles as an english tutor, in order to assist in their academic journies. I also believe that a tutor should maintain a…

Kastaub was extraordinary as a tutor, and I fully intend to use him again and again in the future to assist Elijah in 3 unit maths. That initial 2hr session helped tremendously. Pls tell Kastaub that Elijah earned a 70% score in both the graphical equations tests! This was a fabulous result for him.

Inside Berowra WatersTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alex worked through simplifying algebraic expressions involving different orders of operations and solved one-step algebraic equations.

For Year 9, Emily practised factorising quadratics—focusing on the difference of two squares and perfect squares—and extended this to non-quadratic algebraic expressions like monic quadratic trinomials.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Marcus revised hyperbolas and exponentials, applied reasoning to congruent and similar triangles, and tackled mixed deductive geometry and advanced quadratics questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student tended to avoid writing out working in algebra and surds, as seen in tests where "he had full pages with no working" and lost marks even when the final answers were correct.

In Year 7, a student sometimes missed critical details in multi-step word problems by not reading questions carefully—especially negatives or what was specifically being asked (e.g., calculating who did NOT attend an excursion).

For a Year 4 lesson, one student's confusion with area and perimeter of composite shapes was compounded by unclear layout in written work, making it harder to spot errors during review.

Recent Achievements

Mhairi can now confidently distinguish between factorising quadratics and solving for x, applying both techniques accurately after previously struggling and confusing the two.

Catherine, who used to miss errors in her maths assessments, is now self-correcting her own work and has even spotted mistakes in her teacher's solutions—something she'd never attempted before.

Meanwhile, Tom (Year 4) moved from needing reminders on vertical multiplication to multiplying a 6-digit number by a 3-digit number entirely on his own by lesson's end.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Berowra Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Wideview Public School.
