In my current study, the most important skills are independent learning and peer teaching. I aim to teach students how to identify their gaps and where to look, whether Google or Youtube or books or teachers. I will teach students study skills like note taking or flashcard techniques. In the end, my goal will be to make the student the expert and…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to help them feel supported and encouraged. This means teaching in a way that makes sense to them and giving them helpful feedback. It's also important to boost their confidence so they believe in themselves and stay motivated to learn. Creating a friendly and open environment where they…

I think that as a tutor, being able to understand the perspective of the student is crucial in educating them. Tutoring is a student-centred occupation and one should be able to assess students' knowledge in real time in order to develop effective teaching solutions. Another important tutoring technique is to be prepared for sessions. Whether it…

Approach tutoring with an open mind. Some students can easily grasp the concepts while the others it may take time or a special approach for them to understand.Making the student feel comfortable is very important to allow them to express themselves and feel free to ask if they don't understand. Explaining why things are the way they are instead of…

This includes figuring out learning strategies that work well for the student and building confidence in tackling new and difficult subjects. Tutoring also provides a space to ask questions and seek…

I believe that the most important thing to do is to communicate with my student and get an idea of what they know and don't know. It is important to build upon existing knowledge to explain other concepts and to avoid confusing my student. I think my strength is being patient with my student. A tutor should be able to provide lessons to a student which are tailored to their abilities and learning style. This is something which students can't always get in their regular classes and a tutor could provide through being attentive. They should also be able to make students feel confident in their abilities and iron out any weaknesses. My…

The tutor should act like a robust bridge between the student and knowledge. He/she should guide the student in achieving erudition by showing the correct path. Tutors should also try to develop interest in students for subjects and it should not be confined to the prescribed curriculum. On the other hand it is prerogative for the tutor to realize…

The most important thing a tutor can do in my opinion is be patient with a student and try and understand the problem from their perspective. By doing this, you are able to see more clearly the issue that they might be having. I also believe that finding the best learning method for a student is a key part of the role as a tutor, and this will…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is inspire and motivate. While these seem like simple elements, in successfully doing so, the tutor has essentially altered the learning experiences for the student from that moment onwards. The student is then able to develop their confidence in their subjects, push to achieve their goals,…

Creating an environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and exploring ideas they may be unsure about is one of the most important things a tutor can do. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to assure them that they are making progress. They shouldn't be compared to their peers, but rather themselves from before. I'm very patient and I understand that the reason many of the young people going to extra tutoring do so because they need help. I am aware that the students…

Instil confidence, teach problem solving and critical thinking that can be applied across all academic areas, and encourage resilience when students are struggling, reiterating that it is okay to not understand straight away and that persisting is the most important thing. The most important thing is building genuine confidence, not just teaching, but helping students trust their own ability to work through problems. Support them. Sometimes students just need that boost of confidence and support to understand. Inside Bowen HillsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Olivia worked on finding areas between curves using integrals and tackled equation manipulation through pattern recognition exercises.

In Year 10, Emily focused on matrices—identifying when pairs can be multiplied and practicing basic matrix multiplication along with identity matrices.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Max revised operations with fractions (including converting improper to mixed fractions) and explored divisibility tricks to strengthen number sense.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Specialist Maths, a student hesitated to start unfamiliar worded questions and struggled with forming equations from problem statements; as one tutor observed, "she didn't know where to begin when creating an equation for vectors."

In Year 9 algebra, another found it difficult to break down complex problems, often skipping the use of diagrams and missing key command words in exam questions.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student regularly mixed up the order in division calculations—verbally reversing $98 ÷ $4.50 despite writing steps correctly—which led to confusion when interpreting answers on word problems involving money.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Bowen Hills recently saw a Year 11 student who, after doubting her ability with trigonometry, surprised herself by accurately applying equations and confidently working through quadratic tangent problems on her own.

In another session, a Year 9 boy who used to rush and make small errors has started slowing down during calculations—he now checks his working for mistakes and is quick to fix them if something doesn't look right.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who once hesitated to speak up brought in a tricky maths test question she couldn't solve at school and asked to tackle it together.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bulimba Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Fortitude Valley State Secondary College.
