I think it is to create a supportive environment where a student can feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions, all the while improving in each step. My biggest strength is breaking difficult concepts into smaller steps. I try to explain why we do each step rather than just memorising formulas without understanding them. Once students…

The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is understand a student. Tutoring without understanding the student is similar to filling a closed bottle, It's of no use. So First understand the student, understand everyone is unique and everyone has a different pace to grab the things. To deliver things in the way that they need will eventually…

A tutor should be understanding of their students' learning and study patterns and help them in a way that will benefit their students the most. A tutor should personally support and encourage their student to become more confident in themselves and their study areas alongside explaining content. I am able to use a range of different explaining…

In my experience as a student when my tutors understood my problems and tried to solve them was the thing that stayed with me the longest, also tutors that are your tutors when your studying but friends when you just talk to them. Tutors that are not afraid of showing some tough love when they are disappointed with me are also the ones that keep…

The most important things that a chemistry tutor can do for a student is to allow their minds to create their own version of knowledge rather than just gaining a pre-existing idea. It's only when we challenge the students to think out of the box that they actually start realising the importance of what was in the box. Giving them a vivid…

The most important thing I can do as a chemistry tutor is meet every student where they are. That means truly listening to them, understanding what they already know, and empowering them to vocalize their own thought process because when a student can articulate their thinking, real learning begins. Rather than lecturing, I guide. I help students…

The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is listen. Is there a way the student feels they learn better? Perhaps through pictures instead of words? Is the student not focussed and extremely tired? Would it be more productive to learn outside in the backyard or reschedule for another day? Students are young, but they are young…

Build real understanding rather than memorisation, and build the student's confidence alongside it. My personal measure of whether a student has actually learned something is whether they could turn around and explain it to someone else. I think a good tutor also needs to be patient and encouraging, especially when a student is struggling, because…

The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for their student is to build confidence and independence. 1. A tutor should understand the different needs of different students and find a way of teaching that best suits them. So preparing suitable material for different students are very important. 2. Never teach to the test. It not only diminishes the student’s interest in the subject but also prevents them from developing further understanding…

Inside Box Hill SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Summer practised reading aloud with expressive punctuation and worked on multiplication, division, and order of operations using BIDMAS.

In Year 9, Jolie completed a timed selective-school style maths test and reviewed errors in both ACER Maths and Science practice questions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student covered simultaneous equations from the Cambridge VCE Methods 1&2 textbook and was introduced to basic trigonometry concepts along with calculator skills relevant for VCE Methods.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 algebra, he skipped showing steps in equations, which made it hard to spot calculation slips. This meant more time spent searching for mistakes instead of building confidence.

During Year 7 fractions and ratios, answers were sometimes written without full working—especially when converting between percentages and decimals—which left the logic behind his solutions unclear.

In senior functions, there was a tendency to avoid writing out all transformations or endpoints when graphing hybrid functions; this led to confusion mid-question and slowed progress.

When worded problems appeared in both Years 8 and 11, hesitation with identifying key terms often blocked him from forming equations at all.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Box Hill South recently saw Annabel, a senior student, move from confusion to independence with logarithms—she now solves exponentials with different bases on her own after previously needing step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, James (Year 10) was struggling to interpret worded maths questions but now independently translates them into algebraic expressions and substitutes values accurately, a shift from earlier hesitation and guesswork.

In Year 5, Jacob had difficulty handling negative numbers; using number lines during his {Box Hill South tutoring} session helped him visualise the process so well that he now completes these calculations unaided.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Blackburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kingswood College.
