Building confidence is key to academic success. Secondly, a tutor should tailor their…

I think a tutor can bring out the inner talent of a student. Suppose a student who could not able to gain a good marks in exams or failing continuously, I will give that student mental support. I will give him or her motivation by telling that you can achieve anything in your life by doing hardworking. The most important thing is that a tutor can…

I believe the most important thing for a tutor to do is to keep the student engaged. Often students in tutoring are behind in work because they lose focus in a classroom or simply find it boring. Being able to hone a student's attention to the work will dramatically improve their chances of success. I can often work with different learning styles,…

I can make the student not only competent, but also comfortable and confident in a certain topic. I understand how stressful hard subjects can be. I want to take away the feeling of fear when students enter a class they think they're not good in. Another thing is teaching a student to be an autodidact. I was fortunate enough to know this tactic…

A tutor is beyond someone that can just teach some topics to students, but they are someone that the student looks upto, and feels comfortable sharing their weaknesses to. I consider a tutor responsibility towards students is to be committed and flexible. The tutor should be with their student even if both have been going through the exam period. The tutor should never cancel on a lesson with a student for their own studies. As well, it is a must to be patient towards the student and be flexible as a tutor to learn…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to celebrate even the smallest of wins. No matter how slow or hard progress is, it is still progress! I think that as a tutor, we should be different from teachers at school. We should provide extra care to their needs and catering to what areas of a particular topic they are struggling with, in order for them to improve. Therefore, I think that conducting a personalized teaching plan for the students to observe and explore what methods they can…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to break a concept down to its simplest form. In my school days, I often found this to be the easiest way to learn. If your basic foundation of any concept is strong, it gets much easier to build on that and learn more complex information pertaining to it. Moreover, being…

I believe explaining a concept in such a way that the student understands it intuitively and can thus use that understanding to solve different problems, rather than simply rote-learning a series of facts, is an incredibly important part of being a tutor. The tutor should be adding to a student's toolkit such that they can solve a variety of…

Above all else, I believe a tutor should prioritise student wellbeing. Beyond academic achievement, it's essential to foster a sense of belonging, confidence and self-worth in each student. Inside BurswoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Patrick worked on addition and tallies using dice games to build number fluency, then began practicing basic column addition for improved calculation skills.

In Year 9, Charlotte focused on solving simultaneous equations by both substitution and elimination methods, as well as drawing linear graphs to visualise solutions.

For Year 10, Ethan revised trigonometry with a focus on finding unknown side lengths and angles in right-angled triangles, and practiced applying the Pythagoras theorem through targeted problem sets.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student in Chemistry struggled to keep her assessment notes both complete and accurate; as a tutor observed, "her cycles summary was slightly incorrect and incomplete," which meant extra revision time before tests.

In Year 9 Maths, another student leaned heavily on calculators for simultaneous equations, leading to less confidence with handwritten solutions during practice.

For a younger learner in Year 3, loss of focus during tallying tasks led to miscounts—he could verbally count but when writing, "something gets missed." The frustration grew visible after each error, often resulting in disengagement mid-task.

Recent Achievements

One Burswood tutor recently saw a Year 10 student move from needing step-by-step support with trigonometry to solving triangle problems independently, even selecting the correct rule (sin, cos, or tan) without prompting.

In Year 11 Chemistry, a student who previously struggled with structuring investigations can now set out a clear plan for identifying unknowns and works through sample problems mostly unaided.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who used to guess when tallying numbers now checks his own work and almost always tallies correctly; last session he confidently totalled several dice on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Victoria Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Augustine's Primary School.
