Providing a safe environment can be useful for students to be able to ask questions they are comfortable with. It is important to provide students with encouragement and goals to reach. I am able to break down difficult concepts into small manageable chucks. I am friendly and students would feel comfortable to ask me questions they may not be able…

If a tutor makes the concept easier and practical with examples then students can easily understand. I think this quality should be in every tutor. My biggest strength is my ability to build relationships with students. I excel at natural encouragement and have a genuine interest in helping students learn and grow. I'm also an excellent…

Be empathetic and put yourself in the shoes of the student whole teaching them, to understand how they view the subject at hand and how you can help them understand it better. It's also important to be well prepared and to be willing to listen to the student's ideas and concerns and open to research anything needed in more depth to help the…

Being a student myself, i literally have lots of doubts that i would really want to clear and get an idea of the topics that i feel might trouble me a bit, so i feel that, a tutor must posses always be available to solve and manage all the doubts that the student can ponder upon. A tutor can guide and help the student in the teaching-learning process. First, the tutor should find innovative ways of teaching learning and different methodologies and engage them so that their learning happens in the best way possible. A tutor should focus on practice and assessments. He/she can share the tips and techniques on how to study…

I think a good tutor is beyond just a subject matter expert and can be conducive to the development of the student as a whole. I feel the concept of tutoring is very personal and that a tutor should make a student feel comfortable enough to encourage him/her to view the tutor as a confidante. Furthermore, there's the added advantage of being able…

I think that it's really important to be a good listener so that you can use feedback from students to improve your teaching. Not everyone learns in the same way so it's really important to work with each student to find the learning tehniques that work best for them. It's also important to recognise that each student could prefer different…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help the student understand concepts and ideas they have been struggling with. Especially in maths, where everything is very logical, some things very much appear complicated, but once you understand it, it is very simple to apply, so a great tutor should be able to guide a student…

I think a tutor can bring out the inner talent of a student. Suppose a student who could not able to gain a good marks in exams or failing continuously, I will give that student mental support. I believe the most important thing for a tutor to do is to keep the student engaged. Often students in tutoring are behind in work because they lose focus in a classroom or simply find it boring. Being able to hone a student's attention to the work will dramatically improve their chances of success. I can often work with different learning styles,…

I can make the student not only competent, but also comfortable and confident in a certain topic. I understand how stressful hard subjects can be. For me, the most important thing a tutor can provide a student is confidence. It is paramount that a tutor encourages the student to become intrinsically motivated to study and to cultivate a love for the subject, as this will allow the student to fully achieve their potential. Ensuring that a student has confidence and self belief can be just as…

Inside BurswoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Patrick worked on addition and tallies using dice games to build number fluency, then began practicing basic column addition for improved calculation skills.

In Year 9, Charlotte focused on solving simultaneous equations by both substitution and elimination methods, as well as drawing linear graphs to visualise solutions.

For Year 10, Ethan revised trigonometry with a focus on finding unknown side lengths and angles in right-angled triangles, and practiced applying the Pythagoras theorem through targeted problem sets.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student in Chemistry struggled to keep her assessment notes both complete and accurate; as a tutor observed, "her cycles summary was slightly incorrect and incomplete," which meant extra revision time before tests.

In Year 9 Maths, another student leaned heavily on calculators for simultaneous equations, leading to less confidence with handwritten solutions during practice.

For a younger learner in Year 3, loss of focus during tallying tasks led to miscounts—he could verbally count but when writing, "something gets missed." The frustration grew visible after each error, often resulting in disengagement mid-task.

Recent Achievements

One Burswood tutor recently saw a Year 10 student move from needing step-by-step support with trigonometry to solving triangle problems independently, even selecting the correct rule (sin, cos, or tan) without prompting.

In Year 11 Chemistry, a student who previously struggled with structuring investigations can now set out a clear plan for identifying unknowns and works through sample problems mostly unaided.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who used to guess when tallying numbers now checks his own work and almost always tallies correctly; last session he confidently totalled several dice on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Victoria Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Augustine's Primary School.
