Finding the right method to educate a student. The way you present your working and explanation should always suit the students learning style. Only then can the student understand the concept in depth and apply their learning to a new question. As I was once a private tutee, I understand how the tutor should explain concepts in a clear and…

The most important thing a tutor can do is help students believe in themselves. When students feel confident, they learn faster and are more willing to try. Every student learns differently, so the there is one more important thing, to understand each student’s needs and adjust teaching methods to fit them I’m good at breaking down complex…

Although it is highly important that a tutor teaches their students the material covered in the syllabus, it is equally as important that the tutor teaches their students the tools required to succeed in a competitive academic environment. Fundamentally, a tutor must be able to pass on their knowledge to students such that they can progress academically. This should be accompanied by helping and testing the students where necessary. I prefer to break down complex concepts into smaller ideas, which can then be used as a foundation for understanding and applying the actual…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to explain it so they understand what you're saying, and then give them time to figure it out on their own with out being given the answer, and without time constraints. I also think that making them feel comfortable to ask for help is very important, because if they don't ask…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build confidence. School can often be a highly pressurized environment with an intense focus on academic success. It is so important to remind young people that success is measured in many different ways, and that school can be a fishbowl -> everyone can be successful! I believe I am patient and…

First and foremost, a tutor has to gel up with the student, make him/her comfortable. Once that is done, the teaching method adopted must be interesting, with must include examples from daily life so that the student can relate to it easily. Moreover, a diagrammatic approach must be used while teaching, since, children tend to remember pictures…

Inside CalistaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Sam focused on algebraic fractions and using indices rules to simplify expressions, also practising total surface area and volume calculations.

In Year 9, Mia worked through linear graphing by finding gradients and y-intercepts from equations and graphs, then used these skills to solve inequalities.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Oliver practised multiplying fractions and adding fractions with different denominators, reinforcing understanding of equivalent fractions using visual models.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, a student repeatedly tried to solve algebra and geometry questions mentally rather than writing steps, which made it harder to spot small errors—needs to write out working out instead of just doing it in her head.

A Year 11 student's notes were often cramped and hard to follow during index laws revision, causing confusion when checking answers.

In Chemistry (Year 10), missing or misusing formula sheets led to lost marks on balancing equations.

One primary student struggled with times tables recall, sometimes losing confidence after mistakes and hesitating to attempt harder problems the next lesson.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Calista recently noticed Keara move from needing frequent hints with trigonometry to solving problems independently and scoring 60% on her latest test—up from 40% last time.

Joshua, another older student, has started tackling harder linear graph questions without prompting and achieved over 80% on his last two maths tests.

Meanwhile, Ava in Year 9 no longer waits for answers but now explains her reasoning out loud before asking for help—a big shift from staying quiet when unsure. Last week, she confidently chose a new strategy on her own when faced with a challenging equation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kwinana Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Calista Primary School.
