Being honest, open and friendly. If a student can trust you, teaching becomes so much easier and so much more fun. Being organized and ready to teach content are qualities that are really important for a tutor since I firmly believe that you need to have a plan before doing anything. I am incredibly patient, friendly and hard working. This makes…

Students may at times be overwhelmed by the amount of school work, so encouraging and giving them hope is key aside from all the actual work! Encouragement is key! Building a friendship to avoid intimidation. I am very approachable, invested but also fun! I love to help students but also adapt to different ways that best suits their style of…

I believe that letting a student know that I care for her/him is essential to earn her/his trust and full attention. As a tutor, I will also make sure to plan my approach in a way that will best fit a specific student because every child is different and they have different needs. I, myself, love studying and I will try my best to pass that…

Most important thing a tutor can do is teach and guide them. Teach them the things they need to learn and tell them what to do to get proficient at it. As a tutor my strengths include, ability to explain things clearly and multiple times if required. As well as listening to the students doubts and understanding. Also going according to the…

A tutor can change the perspective of a student regarding any subject. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand the student's capacity and design a curriculum that fits their learning capabilities. Collaborating with them. The tutor-student relationship should be viewed as a partnership. Keeping this at the forefront of lessons together will also promote important qualities such as patience and good listening skills that allow your student to feel comfortable enough to ask questions, express concerns or make mistakes. This also helps tutors…

A good tutor takes the time to understand these aspects and tailors their teaching approach accordingly. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to be flexible with their different learning styles. Often when students ask for a tutor it's because they are unable to learn using the method their teacher uses. It's a tutor's job to rework concepts in a way so that students can benefit from it. Simply repeating what a teacher has said isn't…

For me, the most important things a tutor could do for a student, is not teach them the material but rather teach them transferrable skills that can help them tackle any material thrown at them. Like for example in English class, if they are studying unfamiliar text I don't want to teach students to study like specific texts on past exams, but…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to have the able identify the students areas that need improvement, this way students are able to identify their weakness them selves in order to be more independent with their studies as years progress. Teach the student how to learn. As a tutor your ultimate goal is to help the student become an independent learner. Be willing to share your own experiences. By sharing information about what you have encountered, the student may feel relieved that he is not alone. Sharing experiences and lessons learned goes a long way toward building trust and…

Inside CardiniaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Ruby focused on decimals—rounding, adding, and dividing—and then applied these skills to solve currency and discount problems.

For Year 8, Josh tackled algebraic equations using backtracking methods and practiced graphing straight lines by finding their equations from Cartesian plane diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Emily revised trigonometry concepts through homework questions and worksheets, before moving on to solving linear equations involving variables on both sides.

Recent Challenges

During Year 8 algebra and ratio work, Eugene often did not submit completed homework by the due date, making it difficult to address errors promptly.

In Year 10 trigonometry revision, written solutions were sometimes messy—steps and working became hard to follow, as noted: "It was tricky to check for calculation errors when workings weren't clearly laid out."

For a recent senior exam preparation session, Eugene relied heavily on his notes rather than attempting problems independently first. This meant less time spent building confidence in unfamiliar questions and more time retracing earlier steps.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Cardinia recently saw a few real learning shifts worth noting. In Year 10, Eugene moved from occasionally missing homework deadlines to now completing all assigned tasks on time and even scored full marks on recent linear equations assignments—this turnaround means class time is now focused on extending his skills instead of catching up.

A Year 11 student who used to avoid asking for help during sessions has started reaching out between lessons when stuck, leading to noticeably fewer repeated errors in her trigonometry work.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who struggled with attention to detail began double-checking answers independently and caught her own mistakes during a mixed numbers exercise.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Pakenham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Cardinia Primary School.
