I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to equip a student with critical thinking skills relating to HOW to approach a problem. If a student can frame a problem, or recognize which tools are appropriate, then the rest becomes much more manageable. - I have a good knowledge of subjects, and their applications. - I can often recommend…

The tutor can do to his students is that guide them and make them learn the way that they're not pressured and relax so that they will look forward for my tutoring class not that they will drag themselves in my sessions. Learning in my class should be their comfort zones not to be pressured. My strength is that I graduated in an Engineering…

I firmly believe these are some important things a tutor offers his/her student: 1.Set High expectations. 2. Establish classroom routine 3.Show that the tutor care about each student in the class 4. Teach student life. Being kind human is better than an arrogant genius. I look up to my mentors, who not only taught me skills, but also gave me their thoughts and their experience. I do like to keep that in mind and be very careful of how I think and act around them, as the most important thing a tutor can do is teach a student the biggest…

I definitely think that there needs to be a solid understanding of the student and the way in which they learn so that the tutor can teach them in a way which is most effective to them. Along with this, I think that the tutor should make the student feel comfortable with them so that they feel free to ask questions or ask for further…

Individuality. As I have spent time as a basketball coach and a chemistry tutor. In this time I have learnt how different people intake knowledge and how different people need support. The most important things are: - to help the student become an independent learner so that eventually they do not rely to a tutor for academic success - to give them methods or techniques so that their study is more effective and efficient - to help the student learn how to prioritise what they need to get done (in terms of homework, study, or…

A tutor should make the student feel supported, understood, and confident. It’s not just about giving answers—it’s about helping them think independently, stay motivated, and believe in their ability to learn and improve. I'm patient, a good listener, and able to explain things in a simple, relatable way. I adapt my approach based on each…

I think that as a tutor, being able to understand the perspective of the student is crucial in educating them. Tutoring is a student-centred occupation and one should be able to assess students' knowledge in real time in order to develop effective teaching solutions. Another important tutoring technique is to be prepared for sessions. Whether it…

I believe that it is incredibly important for a tutor to inspire their student to achieve their very best in terms of their academics. I also believe that a tutor can act as a more relatable source of academic help instead of a teacher; a tutor can provide more in depth help outside the class room. I can sympathise with the students in terms of…

Students can of course vary greatly in their strengths, difficulties and needs. This is true both intrinsically and as a function of development and external context. The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is therefore to diagnose those individual needs, and "meet the student where they are." The essential problem of tutoring…

Inside CarindaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Helena explored compound interest calculations and the use of recurrence relations in finance maths, practising with real-life formula applications.

For Year 10, revision with Chloe focused on balancing complex chemical equations and solving stoichiometry problems involving limiting and excess reagents.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Daniel worked on multiplying fractions and dividing fractions, using diagrams to clarify each step.

Recent Challenges

Relied heavily on solving limiting reagent questions in a single step without writing out working, which led to frequent sign errors—"rushes every question, needs to write his working out instead of solving questions in one go."

A Year 10 English student's assignment draft showed missing punctuation and lacked coherence, making feedback harder to act on.

In Year 6 Maths, mental multiplication was attempted quickly but with inconsistent handwriting and forgotten steps during multi-digit calculations.

For a senior Science report, the absence of formal justification for chosen methods left some conclusions unsupported by evidence.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Carindale noticed a Year 11 student who started out confused about simple interest but, after working through real-life savings examples, could independently solve several questions by the end of the session.

In another high school lesson, a Year 10 student who previously struggled with index laws was able to explain and apply them correctly while tackling linear equations.

Meanwhile, one younger student made a subtle but important shift—she began telling her tutor exactly which maths concepts she wanted help with, instead of waiting to be prompted, and finished all her set problems on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carindale Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carina State School.
