To help them understand the concepts instead of giving them just the answer. teach them step by step, how they should start thinking when they have some kind of that question. so that they will know how to do it when it is in the exam. As a tutor, I will say that my strengths are my communication skill and how I organize things for the student to…

A tutor should be able to help a student where ever they struggle. A tutor needs to have full knowledge of what the student requires, what they already know, and the best approach in guiding them. If there is no progress in their performance, then clearly the tutor might not be teaching or guiding them in the right way, in which case they should…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to firstly just listen and understand the student needs and wants. Secondly, a tutor should not use a standard classroom approach to tutoring and rather coach and train the student accordingly to the requirements of the student as every individual learns and absorbs information differently.…

Most important thing is understanding what the students need and help them according to their needs. I have effective communication skills so this can be achieved thoroughly. Then by knowing what the student needs I am able to focus on the problems that the student face and come up with solutions to solve those problems. These problems are in a…

The most important thing for me as a tutor is helping them understand the problem instead of just knowing how to solve the problem, since if they can only solve the question, if a question outside of the curriculum came out then they would not understand how to solve it I like to show real-world applications of a problem, which I think is my…

It's essential to be understanding and listen to students as not all the students are the same or behave the same in a class. Therefore, a tutor must understand the extraordinary things about each student and act in a way so every student would be interested in engaging with the class. I believe understanding this point can help every child to…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give them the confidence to excel in their education. Without confidence, students may feel too uncomfortable to ask questions, and may lack the motivation to learn, thus hindering their learning. Therefore, it is vital for tutors to instill confidence in their students by…

I think the most important thing is for a tutor to make the subject enjoyable and engaging, students are much more likely to put in effort and keep trying if they want to be there. It is also important for a tutor to be able to let a student take their time to understand a concept before moving on, which often doesn't happen at school. I'm…

Give the student confidence in themselves and their abilities. I have often found one of the greatest hinderances in peoples' abilities are themselves. I ensure not only that the student understands the topic but also that they are confident they understand it, rather than getting scared off by a difficult problem. My biggest strength as a tutor…

The most important things a tutor can do are to: 1) Listen to the student. This builds a connection, making learning easier, and helps tutors understand how to cater to students’ needs. 2) Be an example of motivation and work ethic, helping students have patience to work through difficult concepts, find joy in success, and become more…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to help students build confidence in their own ability to learn. Tutoring isn’t just about explaining the content. It’s more about creating a space where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. A good tutor listens carefully, understands what the student needs, and…

A tutor should be setting a student up to be able to know how to approach problems. A question may seem unbelievable when it's first looked at but the student should have the confidence to start applying knowledge that they know to a situation and see where that leads them. That confidence should be built up with aid from the tutor. I think I…

A tutor has the ability to engender self-confidence in a student by ensuring their comprehension of any topic. In the best cases, a student will then take initiative to learn of practise themselves, and at this point it is apparent that their tutor has such an effect on them as to inspire further learning and a deeper fascination with the subject.…

Explain information in a way that the specific student can understand. Once again, up to secondary years of mathematics there certainly is not one way to explain and eventually solve problems. I was always more inclined to be self-taught when it came to maths in secondary school as I often found the ways it taught to be confusing and…

The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, mentally (on an academic level) and emotionally. Local Reviews

Tuition sessions are going on really well as my son has had considerable improvements in Maths with better grades ( jumped from C to A) and much better conceptual understanding of several difficult topics. He finds Ben a gentle and consistent tutor who has kept a wonderful rapport with him. They have also covered some topics in English which helped quite a bit. I would certainly recommend Benjamin as a very helpful and effective tutor for teenagers.

Inside CarltonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Ali worked through operations with fractions—including addition, subtraction, and multiplication with different denominators—and then applied these skills to simplify algebraic fractional expressions.

For Year 8, Max focused on measurement by tackling area problems for irregular shapes (including trapeziums), an introduction to surface area, and a worded question involving the volume of 3D shapes.

In Year 9, Gus practiced converting between units, calculated perimeters, explored surface area, and wrapped up by examining how the angles in any triangle always sum to 180 degrees.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 mathematics, one student's written working was often incomplete or hard to follow—"could work on writing out his working a little bit more"—making it difficult to identify calculation errors in topics like triangular prism volume.

For a Year 11 student tackling calculus, time management issues during exam practice meant that they rushed through u-substitution questions and missed key steps ("exam taking techniques/time management").

In VCE biology, another student needed frequent revision of cellular respiration; gaps in review led to forgetting process stages such as oxidative phosphorylation when answering short-answer tasks. This created frustration when recalling under pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Carlton tutor noticed Ali, a Year 9 student, was able to transfer her new understanding of fractions into solving algebraic expressions—something she'd previously found tricky.

In a recent high school session, Max showed real initiative by drawing diagrams to tackle complex surface area word problems instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, Gus (Year 7) shifted from hesitating with unit conversions to confidently using an acronym he created himself and started tackling unfamiliar perimeter questions without pause.

This week, Ali finished by converting mixed numerals independently after initial struggles.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kathleen Syme Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carlton Primary School.
