I believe that every student has their own unique learning process so I need to be able to cater and adapt to each student and their style. This is done to maximise the student's learning ability and our tutoring sessions together. Developing a trusting and secure relationship is crucial to success when it comes to the student as since the student…

I think to provide a larger framework or paradigm for what they are learning. When something fits into a context for "why" they are learning a concept. Mainly being able to listen to the student. I think I'm enthusiastic about getting to know them and what they care about, which helps me teach. Rather than just trying to do a…

I believe patience is key. Its important for a biology tutor to recognize that every student learns differently, and our role is to explain concepts in multiple ways with positivity and encouragement. I also believe that providing more than just academic support is crucial and helping students build confidence and develop effective learning…

Believing in the students is the most important thing a biology tutor can do for their student. Some students may not believe in themselves and will need an extra boost or encouragement to believe they can do it as every student has the potential to do well. It all depends in the amount of motivation they have and how willing they are to put in…

Being understanding, confident and respectful are key aspects in a biology tutor- student relationship. These three qualities ensure the reliability and integrity of the tutor. I also believe that showing my students I'm not always right is a good skill to teach (mostly these mistakes are unintentional). It is the manner in which one amends one's…

A tutor should provide clear explanations, encourage critical thinking, and build a student’s confidence in their abilities. It's also essential to foster a growth mindset, helping students understand that challenges are opportunities for learning rather than obstacles. Moreover, a biology tutor should be a mentor, guiding students toward…

The most important thing for students at younger ages is to understand key concepts and be able to retain that knowledge for later. For older students, it is simply to be able to perform well on tests. The most important thing I can do as a biology tutor is encourage enthusiasm and engagement in students so they can absorb information. I am really…

I believe that the most important thing about a biology tutor is their ability to motivate and encourage a student in their learning journey. A tutor must be able to show enthusiasm and positivity towards learning, and rather than using rote learning techniques, to engage the student so that they can demonstrate longevity in their education. It is…

Be friendly to the student, show the student that they are confident in them, allow the student to think for him/herself. A tutor should make the student understand the importance of anything they teach the student ,and make sure the student has grasped the concept in the most simplest way to the student. A tutor should understand that each…

The most important things are making students feel comfortable to ask questions, tailoring lessons to how they learn best, and keeping them motivated. I believe this is the same as what I enjoyed. The most important thing in being a tutor is making a fun learning environment for the student so they can enjoy learning and learn much more efficiently. I feel that majority of the time the pressures of school can be quite daunting for students so I believe that not only do we as tutors need to help…

A tutor must be willing to work with and adapt for each student. It is critical to not treat tutoring as one-size-fits-all - indeed many students may be getting a tutor because standard learning methods aren't working for them. It is also essential that tutors create a safe learning space where students are free to ask questions and give opinions.…

Inside CarrumTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alex practised addition and subtraction with regrouping and explored rounding numbers to the nearest ten using practical worksheets.

For Year 10, Jordan focused on essay structure for text responses, including analysing themes in Of Mice and Men and planning a creative writing SAC based on class novels.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Maya worked through argument analysis techniques by reviewing teacher feedback on her Language Analysis SAC and preparing comparative essays using evidence from assigned texts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student repeatedly broadened essay topics too much and defaulted to retelling the plot instead of addressing the specific prompt; as one tutor noted, "he needs to focus on the pertinent aspects of writing a review, rather than just re-telling the plot." This tendency led to less effective argument analysis and weaker essay structure.

In Year 7 English, another student struggled with unpacking texts and putting ideas into words, often hesitating due to low confidence—'her confidence in her abilities is quite low.' As a result, drafts stayed incomplete or vague, making teacher feedback harder to apply and progress feel frustrating.

Recent Achievements

One Carrum tutor noticed a big shift with Alex, a high school student who used to need lots of prompting to support his arguments; this week, he independently found multiple relevant quotes for his essay and had his topic sentences ready before the session began.

Another high school win: Talha, who previously waited for hints, is now picking out important quotes on his own and explaining why they matter in context.

In primary years, Asha—who once hesitated over maths questions—has started finishing her work quickly and accurately; last lesson she completed every task without needing reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Patterson Lakes Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carrum Primary School.
