I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence while helping them develop genuine understanding. This means not just giving answers, but guiding them through the thinking process so they can solve problems independently. A good tutor also creates a supportive and structured environment, sets clear expectations,…

1. Convey to the student that if they are finding a subject hard, it is natural. They just haven't found a way that works for them and we are willing to explore that 2. A tutor should understand their student's potential and work accordingly and find ways of teaching that work for them 3. Be patient with a student and have empathy and give them…

Foremost, a tutor should help their student to identify and reach their goals. Knowing what is important to the student and incorporating that into the metrics for success will help them feel like they are making progress. And secondly, tutors should help the student to form good habits; as motivation can only take one so far, incorporating a good…

A tutor should always analyse the strengths and weaknesses of their students. This will provide a detailed insight to the tutors on which areas to particularly focus on. Furthermore, based on the strengths and weaknesses of each student, a tutor can prepare a routine for the students in order to enhance their knowledge in those subjects where the…

I think that being patient and empathetic are two of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Listening empathetically to a student can help a tutor to understand the way that the student thinks. In turn, the student feels understood and real improvements can be made. The best thing any Tutor can do is make a student like a particular subject which she/he used to previously dislike. This means that the Tutor has made a boring subject interesting to the students. Deepti has been tutoring my son in Year 7. Deepti has developed an amazing rapport with my son and has inspired him emensely. His maths results for algebra have improved out of sight since having Deepti tutor him. Deepti is able to engage him and explain the rules and concepts and reinforce them through practice. Having been a teacher myself, I am very impressed with Deepti's skills and this has been reflected in my son's results. In addition his keenness in maths since having Deepti as his tutor is very impressive.

Inside CaulfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Lisa worked on probability through coin toss experiments and tree diagrams, plus an introduction to Venn diagrams for visualising outcomes.

In Year 8, Parth tackled coordinate geometry by practising plotting points and finding intersections of lines using graphical methods.

For Year 10, Marcus focused on quadratic equations—using the discriminant, applying the quadratic formula, and completing the square—building problem-solving confidence with step-by-step worked examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths Methods, one student repeatedly relied on a calculator for simple calculations and missed signs in coordinate geometry when not listing knowns/unknowns. This made it harder to spot mistakes during review.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student arrived without their workbook or preparation notes, leaving them unable to attempt assigned statistics problems.

In Year 5, messy written working on fraction questions meant errors went unnoticed until the end—he guessed answers instead of showing steps, as noted by the tutor.

In each case, rushed or incomplete process habits left gaps that surfaced in class and homework time alike.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Caulfield noted that a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to ask for help is now openly pinpointing mistakes and correcting them during sessions, showing real ownership of her learning.

In Year 11, another student made a breakthrough with finance questions: after struggling with graph-based problems before, he now tackles these independently and even writes clear, detailed answers without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who once rushed through number pattern tasks has begun breaking down questions step by step, reading each carefully before attempting an answer—finishing all the sequence terms accurately on her own this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Caulfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Melbourne Montessori College - Caulfield South Campus.
