The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make sure a student can fully understand topics that have previously been difficult. I do not think it is not enough for a tutor to simply talk through the topic with the student and expect them to understand it. A tutor should explain the topic to the student and then, after more study…

A tutor provides a supportive environment for their students. This is most true for the students who struggle the most, who may need more help than their peers who don't find the topic as difficult. Hello, I am a first-year university student studying the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/Master of Engineering Accelerated Pathway at the University…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is give the student confidence that they can complete problems on their own and be successful in their studies. I remember how disheartening it was when I couldn't understand or effectively answer problems in school. Especially at a younger age, academic success is a value that…

I believe that the most important thing to do is to communicate with my student and get an idea of what they know and don't know. It is important to build upon existing knowledge to explain other concepts and to avoid confusing my student. I think my strength is being patient with my student. I also believe I can encourage improvement and work on…

The most important thing that a tutor can do is to inspire a sense of lifelong learning for the subject that is being tutored. My major strength is my appreciation of the subjects I tutor. Along with that, I always prepare myself with material, supplementary exercises and further reading before class. As a student engineer, I am also very adept…

It's very important that a tutor can passionately engage with a student and journey with them as they progress. I touched on some of these points in my previous answers, but as a tutor I believe the ultimate goal should be to provide one's students with an academic toolbox in the form of an understanding of the fundamental principles of any given topic. By covering first principles, and providing students with problem-solving abilities, he or she can then…

I definitely think that there needs to be a solid understanding of the student and the way in which they learn so that the tutor can teach them in a way which is most effective to them. Along with this, I think that the tutor should make the student feel comfortable with them so that they feel free to ask questions or ask for further…

In my opinion, one of the most important things a tutor can do is to make it clear to a student that they are capable and believe in their abilities as a student. On top of efficiently solving problems, a tutor should be able to explain to the students why it is that they are doing what they are doing. Washim was absolutely fantastic with our daughter Josephine! He was very patient and knowledgeable. Josephine went from a C student in Semester 1 to an A student in Semester 2 last year. The only variable that changed was tutoring with Washim during that period of time.

Inside Chapel HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Alex worked on division skills, converting fractions to decimals, and applying the order of operations through targeted practice.

In Year 8, Jamie focused on consolidating index laws—covering multiplication and division of indices—and practiced calculations with negative integers, reinforcing sign rules.

For Year 10, Sam reviewed simple and compound interest problems and revisited last year's finance topics for consolidation ahead of upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

Alex does rush through some of his multiplication which causes wrong answers.

In Year 8 algebra, a student struggled to break complex problems into manageable steps without support, making equation manipulation harder than necessary.

For a Year 11 student, forgetting to bring notes and not recapping past topics meant essential area formulas were inconsistently recalled during lessons.

A different senior student lost focus midway through multi-step problems and found it hard to re-engage, particularly when revising for exams in measurement and linear equations.

Recent Achievements

A Chapel Hill tutor noticed Lizzie, a Year 10 student, moving from hesitation with linear equations to tackling most questions independently after just a brief explanation.

In a recent high school session, Felix demonstrated genuine progress by recalling Pythagoras' Theorem accurately without prompts—something he'd previously needed reminders for—and even welcomed exam feedback, openly discussing areas he found tricky rather than brushing them aside.

Meanwhile, Alex in Year 7 has started breaking down word problems independently, showing much more independence than earlier in the term when he would wait for guidance before attempting new challenges.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kenmore Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Chapel Hill State School.
