The most important thing a tutor can do is to inspire passion; a person who is sincerely interested in a subject and has a drive to continue delving into it will naturally go much further and achieve much higher then an unmotivated genius no matter the intellect as they will enjoy the entire journey of learning and not just focus on the results. I…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is instead of just making them rote learn and score good marks, make the understand the topic completely in such a way which would be way more beneficial to the students as compared to rote learning. I am confident in my teaching methods and strategies which aim towards improving and widening…

To recognise the student's limits, and to help them reach beyond them. A tutor should set realistic goals for students to help them stay motivated and to make progress in their learning, however, they should also encourage students to achieve higher through effective communication and tutoring support. As the student's needs should be a tutor's…

Listen to what they need, and what they are struggling with. Be patient if they don't understand something at first, and if they are still struggling with the concept after a while, trying teaching it to them in a different way so that they do understand. Have a full understanding of what you're tutoring before you try and explain it. I'm a very…

In my opinion, the most important thing any educator can do for a student is to help them believe in themselves and in what they can achieve. Allowing a student to see the potential within themselves is crucial to helping them reach that full potential. I think my greatest strength as a tutor is the fact that I truly enjoy what I do. I find…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is get them to enjoy or at least engage more with a subject they may be struggling with. Proving new angles and fresh insight is one of the best ways to do that. I also think providing students with an internal motivation can be very helpful (getting them to engage with their…

I believe that a tutor plays an incredible different role to the classroom teacher. Being a role that has one-on-one interaction with a student, a tutor's most important thing is to focus their practice and method to the individual characteristics of the student. An example of this could be having activities with high intensity and movement for…

As previously mentioned, I think the most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to listen. If you do not listen to the students expectations and responsiveness to the material then the sessions will not be productive, and the student will not improve. My strengths are that I am an incredibly patient tutor, as well as a good listener.…

One of the most important effects a tutor can have on a student is bringing out their confidence and have their student feel supported. Throughout my experience as a tutor, many students have said "I'm stupid" and this falsehood is holding them back. They lack confidence in exams and don't exercise sufficient effort for assignments, because they…

First and foremost I think that is having patience. People do not all learn in the same way and as I mentioned before, when teaching somebody, half the job is just figuring out the best way to frame it, something which requires patience and perseverance. What is also important as a tutor is not just telling students what they need to know, but…

There are numerous things a tutor should be able to do. I think providing these students with lessons that pinpoint certain issues and flaws, acknowledging student welfare (such as stress), and ultimately showing (or delivering), that same powerful desire for their students to do well, are only a few things a tutor should provide for a student.…

The most important thing is to probably instead of spoonfeeding the information to the student, communicate the importance of practice, discipline and routine. A good tutor will be able to make a connection with their student, and can understand their individual needs as a learner. I think that if a tutor isn't able to do this, then any knowledge they possess can't be effectively taught. I think a good tutor should also have a strong grasp over whatever they teach, and being able to teach is the biggest…

Washim was absolutely fantastic with our daughter Josephine! He was very patient and knowledgeable. Josephine went from a C student in Semester 1 to an A student in Semester 2 last year. The only variable that changed was tutoring with Washim during that period of time.

Inside Chapel HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Alex worked on division skills, converting fractions to decimals, and applying the order of operations through targeted practice.

In Year 8, Jamie focused on consolidating index laws—covering multiplication and division of indices—and practiced calculations with negative integers, reinforcing sign rules.

For Year 10, Sam reviewed simple and compound interest problems and revisited last year's finance topics for consolidation ahead of upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

Alex does rush through some of his multiplication which causes wrong answers.

In Year 8 algebra, a student struggled to break complex problems into manageable steps without support, making equation manipulation harder than necessary.

For a Year 11 student, forgetting to bring notes and not recapping past topics meant essential area formulas were inconsistently recalled during lessons.

A different senior student lost focus midway through multi-step problems and found it hard to re-engage, particularly when revising for exams in measurement and linear equations.

Recent Achievements

A Chapel Hill tutor noticed Lizzie, a Year 10 student, moving from hesitation with linear equations to tackling most questions independently after just a brief explanation.

In a recent high school session, Felix demonstrated genuine progress by recalling Pythagoras' Theorem accurately without prompts—something he'd previously needed reminders for—and even welcomed exam feedback, openly discussing areas he found tricky rather than brushing them aside.

Meanwhile, Alex in Year 7 has started breaking down word problems independently, showing much more independence than earlier in the term when he would wait for guidance before attempting new challenges.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kenmore Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Chapel Hill State School.
