What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build a relationship with them. Listening to a student, assessing what areas they struggle with most, and celebrating the accomplishments they have made in their studies (whether big or small), is key in strengthening the student's trust in the tutor. In turn, this…

Among the most important things a tutor can do for a student is that a tutor must be able to understand a student's learning style so that the student would be able to learn the material in a way that is analogous to their mode of synthesising knowledge. A tutor must do this all the while being open and kind and most especially warm towards the…

Confidence and a sense of autonomy are critical components of a developing student and are the most important foundations a tutor can provide. Discipline and organisation are also important in seeing consistent growth in a student. However, building a strong and friendly relationship that is long-lasting is always necessary to see any progress in…

A tutor can help build a child's confidence in their own abilities. They can inspire them to learn and can crucially create an environment of nurture and care. Most importantly, a tutor can encourage a love for learning that helps create the foundations of a successful student. By equipping students with the tools required to improve their…

There could by many reasons why students come to tutoring: they're struggling to keep up, they want to excel or simply their parents want them to go. No matter the reason, what I think is most important for a tutor to do is to try and make the students actually interested in the content in front of them and then aid them as they grapple with it.…

Be adaptable and change teaching methods based on what the student needs the most, whether that's different exercise styles or explaining a concept in a different way. I believe that knowing how to apply the content is just as important as knowing the content in order to maximise marks. I think a strength of mine is reading questions and quickly…

I believe it is extremely important for a tutor to have similar hobbies or experiences to the student so that the student feels comfortable and safe by taking out the power balance many often feel between their tutor or teacher. This also helps as content taught in our sessions will flow better, and create more engagement from the student. Having…

I believe the most important thing a tutor/teacher can do for their students is to help them discover their true potential, eradicate doubt and hone their abilities in what may otherwise seem an impossible task. A tutor needs to be patient and build a healthy learning curve. One of the most important things for a tutor is to be encouraging and positive. Negativity can lead to resentment towards a subject and deflect the student from making a genuine effort to learn. A tutor also needs to be well-versed with the material so they can teach the student as…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is support and mentor a student, not just teach the content. That means creating a safe, encouraging space where they feel comfortable asking questions, building their confidence, and being guided. A good tutor also helps students develop better study habits and self-belief, setting them up for…

Tutoring is about building a relationship with the student based on trust and respect, making the student feel comfortable enough to ask questions, express their concerns and doubts, which was a key aspect for me when I was learning. The most important thing for a tutor to do for a student is providing as much information as they can. I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to foster curiosity and build a student's confidence. Encouraging students to study a subject for a deeper purpose, rather than simply aiming for high grades, helps them develop genuine interest and motivation to learn. When students become curious, they are more likely to explore ideas…

A tutor is someone that a student can rely on for support. They are pragmatic in finding ways to ensure the student has a positive experience with learning. The student is in control, and the tutor is a guide that assists and also facilitates the student to take safe risks, ask questions and completely engage with their learning in ways suitable…

I believe that tutoring should not be a formulaic job. Essentially, what that means is that different people have different ways of learning and I think it's important for tutors to be able to adapt to how a student approaches a particular topic instead of standardizing knowledge. My main strengths are that I am very good with people of all ages…

I consider patience and dedication to be the most valuable qualities a tutor can provide. The student needs to feel supported in a learning environment to succeed, especially if it is a subject they aren't particularly strong at. As a former HSC student, I honestly felt the 'tough love' approach some tutors had would deter me from wanting to study…

I found that once I contacted ezy math someone got back to me in a reasonable time frame. My daughter seems to be happy with the tutor that was picked. So far the experience has been great.

Inside ChippendaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Alice worked on operations with decimals and reviewed how to calculate area, using visual examples.

In Year 10, Tom focused on linear equations—finding equations given points or gradients—and practised simplifying fractions rules.

For Year 11, Ruby tackled financial mathematics with simple interest problems and explored arithmetic and geometric sequences using sigma notation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12, one student left her calculator at home and struggled with trigonometry questions—"needs to be more prepared next time to bring calculator when having lesson," noted a tutor.

Meanwhile, in Year 8 algebra, incomplete homework meant confusion lingered over how variables interact; the set practice was not attempted before the next session.

A Year 11 student's tendency to write only final answers during financial maths revision ("did not show steps for rearranging formulas") led to missed errors and difficulty reviewing work later.

Each of these moments resulted in slower progress or repeated mistakes during lessons.

Recent Achievements

One Chippendale tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who, after previously getting stuck on binomial expansion, now completes these problems solo and even applies the formulas to new case studies without prompting.

In Year 11, Paige has started initiating her own working on algebraic equations and makes far fewer calculation errors than before—she used to need constant reminders but now checks herself as she goes.

Meanwhile, a younger student who once hesitated to ask for help with fractions is now confidently spotting and correcting her own mistakes mid-task, recently fixing an error on her test entirely by herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Darling Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Inner Sydney High School.
