The most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence and belief in their own ability. Most students are capable; they just need someone who recognises their potential, supports them, and helps them see it for themselves. My key strengths as a tutor are my communication skills and my ability to explain concepts clearly and in…

I feel making a comfortable learning environment for a student as a important thing to be considered. An environment where the student is confident enough to ask the tutor anything, a tutor friendly enough for a student to approach and clear his/her doubts, making a session interesting and enjoyable for a student to understand the core concept…

The goal of a tutor is to help the students gain confidence in their subject and help the student with their grades. It is important a tutor is able to help a student gain enjoyment from the subject so that they are inspired and happy to continue to study when the tutor is not around. My greatest strengths are in tutoring English. I am able to…

A tutor can change a student's perspective towards studies and make difficult subjects easy for them. Thereby boosting a student's confidence in the subject, which enables them to further share this knowledge with fellow classmates when they have a difficulty. I am very patient and willing to explain the concepts again and again with examples till…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to teach a student how to pursue their own studies, that is, if I can teach a student how to study without the need for a tutor, that's worth more than tutoring them the whole year and it will serve them well for the rest of their life. An excellent tutor will keep their students motivated and…

The tutor should understand his subject matter to be able to deliver complicated ideas to the students simply and concisely. If the tutor cannot do so, he should further his knowledge of that subject matter. I love to use descriptive and outside the box methods to understand mathematical concepts. Because school teaching is restrict by time, the…

Tutors need to be patient, not every student is equally as smart, or equally as attentive. You have to find a balance. A great example I think would be is planting a seed. After you put the seed in the ground, you can put all the water in the world, but it's not gonna grow into a tree in just one day, just like a student, you will break the…

Passion and patience will always come up first. No matter how good the strategy is, if a tutor doesn't have passion on teaching and patience to get along with students, students won't be able to improve efficiently. As a previous special education teacher, and currently a speech pathology student, I can understand that being patient plays an…

To help students to not feel overwhelmed by the subject, since this can extinguish any desire to learn further. I find that the best way of doing this is to break questions or ideas into smaller parts so that the areas that they are struggling with can be identified, isolated, and worked through. I believe that I am patient and understanding of…

I think to be able to cater to each sutdent individually is the most important thing a tutor can do. Each student learns and processes information differently. By understanding this the tutor can adapt their teaching style to suit that of the student. I think my experience in my job and as a student now studying teaching, I have the skills to be a…

I think one extremely important thing a tutor can do is to adapt their teaching to the individual needs and abilities of each student, and adapt themselves to the student, not force the student to adapt to them. This involves listening to the student and observing how they work and then responding to those things. Another extremely important thing…

a tutor has to understand how their students think. because every student has different thinking and level of understanding for one question. by knowing that, we can easily help students understand that question well. however, we need to teach by imagining that we are the students. so, we need to be patient and efficient to reach their…

Inside CottesloeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Chloe practised converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages, and tackled worded percentage problems using real-life discount scenarios.

Year 9 student Lachlan worked on sketching linear equations by creating tables of values and identifying gradients and intercepts, then moved to distinguishing between parallel and perpendicular lines on graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia explored solving quadratic equations using factorisation and the quadratic formula, with extra focus on recognising turning points and sketching parabolas accurately from given equations.

Recent Challenges

Several high school students repeatedly did not complete homework, as seen in Years 9 and 11 ("Did not complete homework, needs to complete at least the minimum amount"), which limited class time for deeper practice.

In Year 10 algebra, working out was often messy or skipped entirely—"notation and setting out needs significant improvement"—making it difficult to spot errors or understand steps.

One Year 8 student consistently tried to solve problems in her head rather than writing out calculations, leading to confusion when tackling multi-step word problems.

During a Year 12 lesson, "sketching was rough…needs to work on doing her sketching as neat and accurate as possible," so graph interpretation suffered under test conditions.

Recent Achievements

One Cottesloe tutoring session saw a Year 11 student who previously rushed through problems begin to slow down and check her answers for sense, catching errors before they became habits.

A Year 8 student who used to hesitate when faced with worded percentage problems is now breaking them into key steps independently and showing her working clearly without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 4 has started attempting every maths question on her own first—something she avoided last term—and only asks the tutor for help after giving it a real try herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Claremont Community Hub & Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like North Cottesloe Primary School.
