I believe it is the willingness to go through a topic they have trouble, and even when they struggle to grasp the concept, to be a helping hand for them. A tutor helps students feel capable of achieving their goals, helps foster good study habits and willingness to study. My main strengths as a tutor are patience, communication, and adaptabiloty.…

The msot influential tutors that I have had have all been there for me beyond just amademically, but also as older people I can look to for advice on various things, and that is what I think a tutor needs to have as this also aids the teaching process because students are more likely to be involved if they enjoy the classes and have that…

The most important things I can do for a student is to engage them in their learning and spark their love/passion for a subject. I want my student to be able to like what they are doing and look forward to the tutoring sessions we have planned. I believe my strength as a tutor is my communication skill. Since I had only recently graduated from…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to take the time to understand who the student is. not every student learns the same way and the only way to effectively help someone is to take the time to know them first. As a tutor, i always take the time to get to know my student first so i can develop a connection with them and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand him/her. By understanding the student, the teacher can learn how to approach and support the student based on their needs and requirements. I am a great communicator who can creatively explain and express ideas in ways that students can learn quickly and easily. I also have a…

To me, tutoring is about helping students be able to confidently do difficult areas of academia, by themselves without the support of anyone else. A tutor unquestionably needs to adapt their ways of teaching to each individual student as everyone does learn in different ways. Personally, I believe essential skills of a tutor include: a passion to…

I consider comprehension and confidence in one's skills to be the most crucial thing a tutor should endeavour for their students to grasp. Once a student's comprehension level reaches a certain stage, their progress will be much faster and smoother. Whilst also their confidence becomes a fuel of reinforcement for their drive in achieving their…

A tutor should be patient and be flexible, able to adjust their lesson plan according to student needs. It is important that the tutor does not just talk AT the student, but allow them to respond and engage with the student, in a way that allows the student to integrate lessons on paper into daily life, and hopefully foster an interest in the…

The old proverb comes to mind of: "Give a man a fish and you'll feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you'll feed him for a lifetime." I think the most important thing a tutor can do is inspire the student, and not just equip them with English skills, but confidence and motivation. The most important thing is to believe in the student, so…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand their students and the way they learn! This means bringing up different approaches to studying if one does not work for the student and ensuring that they are listened to and supported at all time! Tutors should not shame their students and work on more than just achieving…

I believe the most important role of a tutor is to create a judgement-free environment where a student feels confident asking for help. Rather than simply reteaching content they're already learning at school, I concentrate on identifying and targeting weaknesses to support long-term improvement. As a recent graduate, I'm able to build strong…

For the majority of students I have met, a large proportion approach their studies disinterested. Thus, the tutor’s most crucial responsibility is not only to effectively convey the subject matter, it is to do it in a way which sparks engagement. This extends further for theoretical subjects such as chemistry, where the tutor assumes a greater…

Firstly, being kind, patient and listening to the student matters the most. This is because not everyone is the same, not everyone has the same capacity to understand and grasp the concept. One student may understand it in a minute, whereas another may take 10. So its very important that the tutor is kind, patient and listens to the student.…

The most important thing as a tutor is to appreciate students for who they are and to also work around their own respective strengths and capabilities Tutoring is conducted on a one-to-one basis, meaning that you get to know your pupils very well. Listening and being observant. It's important to acknowledge that all students are different and how they learn will vary. So to really help a student grow and improve, I believe it is vital to understand how exactly a student learns. I believe a good tutor should be able to tailor their teaching process to fit the student. I think one of my…

Inside Cranbourne EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Arman focused on improving multiplication using box and lattice methods, then revisited addition and subtraction skills through targeted worksheets.

In Year 8, Mahima tackled simultaneous equations by learning both the substitution and elimination methods, alongside expanding and factorising algebraic expressions.

For Year 10, Jessica concentrated on drawing linear graphs by calculating gradients and intercepts, as well as applying index laws for multiplying and dividing indices with like bases.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, messy or unclear written calculations led to confusion, especially when simplifying algebraic expressions—one tutor observed, "She needs to fix some of her maths layout, primarily on how she sets out her calculations."

A Year 10 student hesitated to ask for help with difficult worded problems and spent too long worrying about unfamiliar concepts, which slowed progress.

In senior years, a lack of double-checking persisted in probability and indices work; mistakes often went unnoticed because answers weren't reviewed.

When homework was incomplete in Year 7 algebra tasks, earlier gaps in times tables knowledge remained unaddressed.

Recent Achievements

One Cranbourne East tutoring session saw a Year 10 student finally stop needing the tutor's approval after every algebra step; she now checks her own work and only asks for feedback at the end, a big change from before when she needed reassurance throughout.

A high schooler who used to get stuck on index laws now completes homework independently and has improved her maths layout significantly.

In Year 5, one student who was hesitant about long division is starting to write out each step methodically, even converting remainders into fractions—a habit he hadn't tried before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cranbourne Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Cranbourne East Primary School.
