I believe that cultivating critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and a growth mindset are important. A tutor should inspire curiosity, instill confidence, and equip students with the tools they need to become independent learners. Moreover, fostering a positive and supportive relationship built on trust and mutual respect is…

On a surface level outlook a tutor is just meant to teach their students and be on their way. But in my perspective, there is more to it than just teaching. A tutor is about being a capable mentor that identifies the student's weaknesses in class and mentally so there is always something the student can work upon both academically and mentally.…

In my opinion, one of the most important things a great tutor can do for a student is to increase their passion for the subject. When a student genuinely enjoys learning about a topic, they will be more motivated. When students love what they're learning, it unlocks their potential. That energy and excitement will hopefully lead to a deeper…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do to a student is to make them motivated to learn the subject, whether that be from the passion of the tutor or from the interest that they develop for that subject over time. I am really good at explaining concepts and simplifying them in a way that the students could understand them. I was…

I believe a tutor should always be able to accommodate to the students' circumstances when helping them learn something new. Many tutors are often high-scoring students, while many students will be those struggling. This leads to some tutors not being considerate enough of the students' lack of prior knowledge and understanding. It is the tutor's…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is that they have the drive and the patience for them until they learn. The whole point of why we tutor kids is for them to learn and apply what they know. You also need to love the student and take care of them as a mother does to their kids. My strengths as a tutor are: - I have patience…

The most important thing a tutor can impart to her/his student is the ability to motivate. Motivation instills a passion, may it be for the subject taught or the anything beyond school hours, it gives the student a sense of purpose and drives the student to be ambitious. The most important thing a tutor can do is be patient. Every student learns differently and at their own pace, and if a concept doesn't click the first time, it's on the tutor to keep finding new ways to explain it rather than getting frustrated or rushing them. I believe going the extra mile to ensure that a student has the proper understanding is primordial. The most important thing a tutor can do is help the student develop interest for the subject. Once the student is throughly interested in the subject, he/she starts to explore on their own. After that the tutor just needs to guide the student in the correct path and occasionally help with difficult problems. However this is not an easy task.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is ensuring his/her availability when they need it the most, in short being accountable to them. There are a few but I think the point of a tutor is for reinforcement. There is no way that a tutor will be able to pump out as much content as a student will be able to consume from traditional school, however with the 1 on 1 nature of tuition, tutors can take topics a lot further than a teacher would for an entire class. Not only this, a tutor…

Inside DocklandsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Hamish focused on place value and identifying prime numbers, using practice exam questions for consolidation.

Year 10 student Olivia worked through solving systems of linear equations by elimination and explored the distance formula between two points with visual explanations.

In Year 11, Ethan tackled function modelling with real-world examples (such as insect population growth) and analysed rectangular hyperbolas, including their transformations and asymptotes.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, one student's algebra work showed gaps due to incomplete homework and minimal revision of textbook questions—"she tended to skip the assigned practice," a tutor noted, which left some equation-solving steps unpracticed.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student felt overwhelmed by dense chemistry chapters and sometimes postponed review tasks; this led to confusion during multi-step equilibrium problems, especially when tired after tests.

In Year 4 maths, inconsistent working in times tables caused errors like "3 x 4 = 11."

A Year 12 student avoided asking for feedback on graphing questions, so misconceptions lingered into the next session.

Recent Achievements

One Docklands tutor noticed that a Year 11 student, Maya, started their sessions feeling nervous about upcoming biology tests but now prompts herself to review marked work and pushes through practice questions independently—something she used to avoid.

In Year 10 maths, Hamish recently stopped skipping key steps when solving linear equations and inequalities; he now writes out double negatives rather than rushing, which helps him catch mistakes that previously cost marks.

Meanwhile, in primary years, Lola has become noticeably quicker at linking old and new maths topics on her own and has started presenting her solutions with clarity during lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Library at the Dock—or at your child's school (with permission), like Haileybury College - City Boys.
