Firstly, I believe that an Academic Tutor is an important job position which requires an individual to holistically support students to achieve their personal and academic goals. In addition, I believe that tutoring should take a personalised approach to teach students specific academic skills which will help them achieve their own developmental…

I think the most important thing as a chemistry tutor you need to be honest, be flexible, be patient, be a good listener, teach the student how to learn. I believe tutors fill a different role than teachers and parents, and that puts them in a unique position to support students. Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the…

The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is being prepared. I have had 1-1 Spanish tutoring in the past, and every week my tutor would arrive prepared with documents and interactive lessons, which were fundamental in enriching my learning of the subject and making the sessions more enjoyable. Additionally, the tutor needs to…

The most important thing for a chemistry tutor to do to a student is to be able to connect with them on a level that allows them to understand the content. Not being able to form a connection with the student makes the learning process tough. It is important to find an approach that enables the student to succeed. As a tutor, I am able to connect…

I think the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is help a student believe in themselves. When students feel supported and not judged, they are much more willing to ask questions and try again when something feels hard. It is also important to guide them rather than just give answers. I think there are a lot of qualities that go into being a good tutor. Some of the most essential ingredients are to be compassionate and build rapport . A good tutor should take the time to connect meaningfully with the student and their families. They will be caring and compassionate, but also professional. Having a good rapport with the student…

If it's a correct match of a student and a teacher, then definitely a chemistry tutor can change the overall personality of his student and in turn learn from him as well. It's not only about grades and positions but about life changing lessons that a tutor can give to his students. I am dedicated and true to my students, and according to me this…

Build their confidence as much as their knowledge because a lot of students struggle not because they are incapable, but because they are convinced themselves they can’t do it. Beyond that, I think it’s important to teach a student how to think through a problem rather than just giving them the answer. The goal is to make them capable enough…

You must be adaptable, and change according to how each student acts since every individual is very distinct, this will help cater to their differences (such as learning speed). Must also remember to leave no one student behind and pick them up when they fail, help them learn from their mistakes. I am very considerate and patient, thus able to…

Inside Elizabeth BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Taiki focused on reading comprehension by working through a story, practising phonics to decode unfamiliar words, and then writing sentences using new vocabulary.

In Year 10, Maddison tackled trigonometry concepts such as solving for angles and sides in right-angled triangles—including elevation, depression, and bearings—using class exercises for extra practice.

For Year 11, Jessica concentrated on theoretical versus experimental probability and also reviewed non-linear relationships like parabolas and exponentials ahead of her upcoming exam.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, one student's reluctance to write out working—"he tries to calculate the entirety of a problem in his head"—led to missed steps and hidden errors, especially in multi-step problems.

For a senior student preparing for exams, messy written work in probability tasks made reviewing answers difficult and slowed down corrections.

Another high schooler repeatedly used the wrong numbers in formulas because she did not check her work step-by-step during quizzes; this meant even strong conceptual understanding was undermined by preventable mistakes.

When students avoided asking teachers for clarification in class, misconceptions persisted longer than necessary.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Elizabeth Bay recently noticed that a Year 10 student, who previously struggled to organise her work, took real initiative by jotting down the specific sections she wanted to review and confidently worked through revision questions on probability and bearings without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student who used to skip steps has begun reading each question aloud before answering, which means he now picks up on key details and avoids earlier mistakes—especially when tackling multi-step word problems.

In an upper high school maths session, one student finally tackled factorising quadratics independently after several weeks of hesitation, asking for extra practice questions rather than waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kings Cross Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Vincent's College.
