The most valuable duty of a tutor is to focus on the holistic development of a student, allowing them to be persistent, independent and problem-solving to tackle any academic or life challenge. The most important thing I have gathered from my own mentoring and tutoring experience is independence and accountabililty for students. I believe that as a tutor, being able to improve a students understanding and knowledge on a subject is a key sub section, but assisting the student in self motivating, doing more than what may be necessary and…

Education is very important in today's societies, many parents hire tutors to help their children catch up or keep up in school subjects where they are having difficulties and have fallen behind their peers. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to celebrate a student's success, whether it is big or small. It builds a student's confidence and motivation to keep learning. For example, I would acknowledge their success or completion of goal right away with specific praise, like "I'm really proud of how you stayed focused on that…

I think for a tutor a combination of two things is the best, firstly giving the students confidence as I found that my tutor gave my confidence in my abilities that I previously had not experienced in some subjects which eventually led to my success. Also providing the best ability to teach and foster improvements in knowledge and skills to…

Using a tailored learning program for all abilities and expectations, and an unfailing growth mindset, a tutor should provide students with a love of learning that leads to internal fulfillment and a virtuous cycle where concepts are pursued willingly, and thus, more thoroughly. However, a tutor is not only a teacher, but a mentor; they should…

Be someone they can be comfortable with and understanding. I think if students are encouraged to ask questions and the tutor is patient with them, they won’t feel scared and they’ll be more transparent with how well they understand the topic. I also realised that when a tutor respects the students, the student will honour the tutors more as…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is teach with a growth mindset and empower students. A tutor should help students build confidence in their own abilities and encourage them to believe that they can succeed, even when the material is challenging. It is also important to foster a deeper understanding beyond memorising theory by…

Having spent a lot of my high school career with a variety of tutors, I have created the ideal profile of an effective tutor in my mind, and the most important thing I value in a tutor is their ability to go beyond showing how to do something and reveal the path a student must take to discover a solution for themselves. The most unforgettable…

I believe the most important thing is to make sure the student fully understands the knowledge, being able to use it in any situation, while enjoying the learning. It is when the student fully engages in their learning experience that the outcome can be fully maximised. I wish this upon all students, and I would love to be the mentor who guides…

A tutor should give the most custom type of teaching to each student as general lectures are also given in school and their is no point in repeating the same. Inside Elizabeth BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Taiki focused on reading comprehension by working through a story, practising phonics to decode unfamiliar words, and then writing sentences using new vocabulary.

In Year 10, Maddison tackled trigonometry concepts such as solving for angles and sides in right-angled triangles—including elevation, depression, and bearings—using class exercises for extra practice.

For Year 11, Jessica concentrated on theoretical versus experimental probability and also reviewed non-linear relationships like parabolas and exponentials ahead of her upcoming exam.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, one student's reluctance to write out working—"he tries to calculate the entirety of a problem in his head"—led to missed steps and hidden errors, especially in multi-step problems.

For a senior student preparing for exams, messy written work in probability tasks made reviewing answers difficult and slowed down corrections.

Another high schooler repeatedly used the wrong numbers in formulas because she did not check her work step-by-step during quizzes; this meant even strong conceptual understanding was undermined by preventable mistakes.

When students avoided asking teachers for clarification in class, misconceptions persisted longer than necessary.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Elizabeth Bay recently noticed that a Year 10 student, who previously struggled to organise her work, took real initiative by jotting down the specific sections she wanted to review and confidently worked through revision questions on probability and bearings without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student who used to skip steps has begun reading each question aloud before answering, which means he now picks up on key details and avoids earlier mistakes—especially when tackling multi-step word problems.

In an upper high school maths session, one student finally tackled factorising quadratics independently after several weeks of hesitation, asking for extra practice questions rather than waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kings Cross Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Vincent's College.
