A vital aspect of tutoring is being non-judgemental. it is important for a tutor to make the student feel comfortable to share if they do not understand something or are struggling. If a student feels as if they will be judged or considered inadequate they are less likely to come to tutor’s for help. Building a strong relationship is extremely…

As tutor, we must make the student happy, comfortable, and have good communication with students. For example, when I have an opportunity to teach the students in primary 2. I want to teach them how to solve the math and explain the homework or material from school. After that, students must do the questions that i give or do the homework from…

Effective communication. As a tutor I feel like it is very important to be able to explain concepts in a variety of ways and be able to help students in a way which they can benefit from. I think my strength as a tutor is my knowledge in mathematics and biology which I have completed in SA to a high standard. As a result, I believe I am aware of…

I consider the ability to communicate in the student's eye level to be the essential as a tutor. For example, a tutor should be able to support students based on their level of education and motivation. My strength as a tutor is my ability to communicate and explain difficult concepts as simple as possible. Also, I take tutoring as an opportunity…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to identify their strengths and areas of improvement in particular to improve the student's overall performance in a particular subject area. Thus, I believe it is really important to enable the student to feel empowered about their learning through support and encouragement. This…

It is to show them the value of education and help them distinguish why it is important for them to learn the subject. If they have the value, they will be a great person in the future. In my opinion, the most important responsibility of a tutor is not to teach specific knowledge or skills but to incite the confidence and curiosity for knowledge in students. Ultimately, a successful tutor is the one who can help students out of their bottlenecks, assists them in studying, and finally equips them with the skills and mindsets for…

Build interest. For younger student, most of them are still trying to find their interest in a certain field. The best thing I can do is to build interest with my humorous skill. Interest can lead students to an automatic learning mode, they will intake the related knowledge and digest them by themselves, and have the ability to do self-study,…

According to me, the most important thing as a tutor is to try and try until the student understands, although it takes a lot of patience and time. It is also important to explore the student's best way of learning, which may include audio, visual, or kinesthetic, and make efforts to teach them accordingly. As a tutor, I first make my students…

I believe that a tutor should be able to build relationships with a student where the students are provided with an environment where they are heard and observed. I think this allows tutors to strategize methods in helping students progress, learn and succeed. This must be done with patience, constant assessment of student's progress, and…

A good tutor needs to understand the student's needs and areas of weakness and work on them. A tutor should create a safe space for a student so that he/she can reach out whenever needed. Through this, a student will feel more comfortable in his/her studies and will acquire more confidence since they will have the opportunity to be more inquisitive. They will be more eager to learn and explore. My biggest strength as a tutor is patience.…

Inside GlensideTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Louis focused on multiplication skills by practising 2 and 3 times tables using grids, explored area and perimeter, and was introduced to basic fractions through visual worksheets.

In Year 10, Maja worked on linear relations by graphing equations in y=mx+c form and identifying x/y intercepts, before moving into financial maths topics such as percentage conversions and worded problems involving discounts.

For Year 11 student Sam, recent lessons covered calculus fundamentals like finding derivatives from first principles and applying them to tangent/normal equations, as well as tackling statistics concepts including mean, median, and mode.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 English, one student admitted to "just getting lazy when writing," choosing simpler vocabulary and structure even though his spoken ideas were stronger. This led to run-on sentences and grammar errors that persisted despite direct feedback—he often only picked them up when the tutor was present.

In Year 7 Maths, a student's lack of times tables recall slowed her problem-solving, especially with negative numbers; as the tutor observed, "basic arithmetic…slows her down."

Meanwhile, in Year 11 History, quoting large slabs of text instead of concise evidence weakened essay drafts. These habits meant less progress during independent work and slower development under test conditions.

Recent Achievements

One Glenside tutor recently saw a huge shift in a Year 9 student who, after previously writing very little, completed an entire essay to standard and now holds himself accountable for improving his phrasing.

In senior maths, another high schooler moved from struggling with simultaneous equations to scoring a perfect mark on her latest test—something she hadn't come close to before.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student surprised everyone by tackling harder area questions without hesitation and finishing them confidently, even when working early in the morning during school holidays.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burnside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Linden Park Primary School.
