The most important thing is to make the student appreciate and enjoy the subject. Once the student can achieve this a much greater effort could be put in the subject and thus good grades follow. Communication is my biggest strength as a tutor. I can talk and present information in the most creative way so the students not only understand the…

The most important things a student can get from a tutor is support and encouragement. There is a genuine need for understanding between students and their tutors. If a tutor is able to understand a students needs and cater to them, then there is no better tutor-student relationship. My strengths as a tutor are definitely my patience and…

Believing in the student is the most vital quality in the tutor-student relationship in my opinion. When there is genuine faith that the student can achieve their goal, it is within my duty as their tutor to help them reach it by doing additional research, being motivated each session, and planning and organising their materials ahead of time so…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is not pressure students and understand that everyone learns differently. Not all students will get something right away, and what matters is being patient and staying with them through the process until they understand. I believe it is about making them feel supported instead of rushed, so they can…

Not only teaching content, but doing it in a clear and engaging manner is important so the student is able to learn effectively. I also believe helping the student feel comfortable is also a priority as it helps them to freely ask questions. The most important thing a tutor can do is inspire confidence. Within the class, it is a safe space for the student to talk about their short comings or lack of understanding. It is then the tutors job to help the student and breed confidence. This then extends out of the class and into the exam hall. My biggest strength is empathy and being able…

Tutors are essential for students who might have trouble learning at school, as school only showcases one method of teaching, which doesn’t work for everyone. Whereas tutors not only bring in an extra method of learning, they can also tailor their teaching to individual students, unlike in schools, where teachers have to teach classes, and…

Inside GlenwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Aryan worked through fraction operations—adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions—and practised connecting percentages to decimals and fractions.

For Year 8, Alisha focused on finding the surface areas and volumes of composite solids using notes and worksheets, along with reviewing formulas for prisms.

In senior secondary, Maya (Year 11) completed HSC exam preparation by tackling varied past paper questions and clarifying major doubts in topics including trigonometry and statistics.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra sessions, a student often left working incomplete when solving equations, which made it hard to spot where misunderstandings with variables arose. As one tutor observed, "she needs to talk aloud so the tutor can know which areas need improvement."

In a senior geometry lesson (Year 11), revision focused mostly on easier past exam questions rather than tackling harder bearings and proof problems—missing a chance to build deeper confidence before assessments.

A Year 7 student avoided writing out steps for fraction addition, leading to repeated denominator errors and confusion about simplifying answers during timed practice.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Glenwood noticed a Year 10 student who previously struggled with scatter plots now drawing them accurately and sharing that he'd received high marks on his topic test.

In a senior session, another student who tended to rely heavily on the tutor's help for algebra was able to tackle multi-step questions solo after a few alternate explanations—solving harder problems without prompting.

Meanwhile, during primary tutoring, one child who rarely asked questions started pausing to clarify things mid-task instead of pushing through confused, showing real initiative. The last session ended with her confidently converting fractions both ways on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanhope Garden Library/ Dennis Johnson Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Caddies Creek Public School.
