All students learn and understand in different ways; some are visual learners, others learn best off a textbook etc. Therefor the most important thing a tutor can do is to be understanding and patient, especially when the student doesn't understand something. It's important to go through the detailed steps to identify where the student gets…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to create and maintain a safe and nurturing environment where the student is free to make and learn from their mistakes and are not afraid to ask for assistance when he/she needs additional help with the concept being taught. Therefore, this will be the environment that I will…

A tutor can significantly influence the students in their future career. He/She must be able to develop a love for the subject in the students which I consider is very important. A good tutor has to be an excellent facilitator rather than a spoon feeder in the subject. This makes the students self-capable to achieve greater things in their life.…

Different students have different skills. I believe recognising this is what helps a tutor make a difference to a student. The most important thing is that a tutor recognises a student as an individual; addressing areas where a student has little confidence while offering lifelong learning strategies. At a practical level, this includes…

I think a teacher should continually assess teaching and solicit feedback from students so that he/she can adapt teaching style to their needs and increase effectiveness. Be patient with them and encourage them to do their best. Consistency is key and results don't just appear overnight, trust the process and at the end all anyone can ask of you is to do your best. Another big thing is to always be honest with them, whether that means admitting that you don't know something (but can find out for them) or letting…

A tutor should be able to first determine how each unique student learns, for if the tutor can understand how a student learns, it will allow the process of teaching them to be much smoother. The most important thing would be to connect with the student, be on the same wavelength. If you can connect with your student then you can understand their struggles learning the content. It also allows the student to be more relaxed and less stressed which aids in their learning. If they see the process of getting tutored as a chore or a burden…

Inside GranvilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Ayaan worked through addition and multiplication basics, then explored simple fractions using number lines.

For Year 10, Zara revised linear graphing by finding x- and y-intercepts from equations, while also practicing algebraic equations with a focus on rearranging terms.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Daniel tackled physics concepts around distance vs. time graphs and applied kinematics formulas to real-world problems.

Recent Challenges

Homework completion was a recurring issue, especially in Year 7 and above—"homework!" appeared repeatedly for students working on algebra, factorising, and trigonometry.

One senior student forgot to bring a quiz home for review, despite reminders to write notes as prompts.

In Year 11 Physics, not having a reference sheet meant key formulas were missed during practice.

A Year 9 student avoided reviewing test mistakes; "will need to look through his test to see where he's made mistakes," the tutor noted. Without this reflection, misconceptions in indices and signs persisted into new material, compounding frustration after each assessment.

Recent Achievements

A Granville tutor noticed a big shift with one Year 9 student who used to avoid seeking help; this week, he spoke up about confusion, leading to fewer mistakes.

Another high schooler, in Year 11 physics, had struggled to recall what topics needed extra revision but now arrived at tutoring sessions ready with a list of questions and even brought home his quiz for review—something he'd never remembered before.

Meanwhile, a younger student who previously relied on finger counting completed all their times tables unaided this session and finished the set in under two minutes.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Granville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Muslim Girls Grammar School.
