listening to students and finding out what they want out of the sessions and how they prefer to learn. By doing so we can offer a method of learning that's customized to them as an individual and not as a class. Learning occurs in many formats and a biology tutor should provide a format that isn't inherently applied in schools - aiding in the…

We have to encourage and help them to find out the interesting of the subject they are studying I'm a good listener, a diligent person. I'm eager to try new methods to help students with their problems, and my…

Besides from general knowledge of the subjects, understanding the strengths as well as weaknesses of the students is a must for personal tutors. We can develop the most effective way to teach if we are fully aware of these factors. Also, one of the most important things a biology tutor can do is to be patient and considerate with their students.…

Tutors should be patient when tutoring and be prepared to repeat themselves or explain something in different ways. Tutors should design lessons that are of interest to the student but are also at the appropriate level for the student's ability. Tutors should be encouraging when students do something well and supportive when students make…

I think the most important things a biology tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, create a safe space for asking questions, and adapt teaching methods to suit their learning style. It’s not just about explaining the material, it’s about encouraging them to think independently, develop problem-solving skills, and feel supported…

The single most important aspect for a biology tutor is to be able to keep the student's attention; losing their focus implicates the loss of any further progress in the topic at hand and their faith in how much you can help them as a mentor. Maintaining their concentration throughout the duration of the session, while tiring at times, pays off. I…

One of the most important things a biology tutor can do is tailor their approach to the student’s needs. Their learning method, their stuggles and strengths. A tutor should help develop the student's study skills, and be able to provide specific and constructive feedback. Patience and flexibility are key qualities to have because it will empower…

I believe, more than anything else, that a biology tutoring space should feel judgement free for a student. A student should not feel hesitant to ask questions or to clarify a concept. In fact, I believe it to be a good sign if a student is able to outright say that my explanation is not what they need or understand. Fostering such a safe and…

Inside GrovedaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ruby focused on area and circumference of circles, along with practicing multiplication and division of decimals.

For Year 10, Josh reviewed the domain and range of functions using graphs, then moved on to translations, dilations, and reflections of various function types.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sam concentrated on calculus skills such as differentiating with chain and quotient rules before applying these methods to solve tangent problems from past exam questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Methods, note-taking habits slowed Dean's progress—"Dean seems a bit slow with note-taking, this can hinder the amount of content covered in class"—and his notes were not organized for revision or open-book tests.

A lack of interest in class further limited engagement.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student struggled to keep arithmetic and units clear when converting measurements, as shown by missing or messy working in her maths notebook.

In Year 12 Physics, skipping careful reading of complex exam questions meant key information was overlooked and mistakes went unchecked, especially under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Grovedale tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to avoid asking questions now stops and seeks clarification as soon as she feels stuck, instead of quietly guessing her way through maths problems.

In a senior session, a VCE student who previously struggled with anti-differentiation managed to solve every trigonometric integration question without any errors and even expanded longer equations on her own.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student measured the length and diameter of objects around her house for homework—something she'd shied away from before—and recorded all the results herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Grovedale Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mandama Primary School.
