I think the most important thing a tutor can do is be supportive. All behaviour is belief driven, if a tutor convinces a pupil that he can do it, he will. I believe I am calm, patient, persevering, and supportive. Especially when it comes to perseverance, I will not be deterred if a student doesn't originally understand my explanations as, if I…

The most important thing to do for a student is to be supportive and patient when teaching them. We have all been there before. Always be kind. My greatest strength is that I am highly empathetic and I can put myself in my students shoes when they struggle in grasping a certain concept. I am very patient and can reassure them that I was once there…

I think adapting to students learning style is vital to allow for the most growth in their education. Tutors are exceptionally valuable as the one on one or small class dynamics allow for the specific needs of a student to be catered for, giving their learning attention in a way that can be difficult to access within the schooling system alone.…

I think an important role tutor must be able to do is to be able to adaptable in their teaching style to cater to the needs of students. Additionally being relatable and exploring how this knowledge can be expanded to world wide applications. I believe tutors need to make strong relationships with both students in order for them to feel…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to personalise their learning in order to teach to the student’s strengths and minimise their weaknesses. Helping them through problems, and actually encouraging and motivating them along without just revealing the answers will help develop their problem solving skills, making the next problems easier to overcome. Tutors can provide a one-on-one situation where they're able to realise the students weaknesses and target those areas. A tutor must be able to develop and understand a student. A student will need to understand the concept themselves and it is our job to assist them to understand any issues that arise in their development. To put it simply, tutors are guides and the student is the captain. Therefore we must be able to resonate with each student and treat each one…

Inside GymeaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Talia worked through simplifying algebraic fractions and practiced changing the subject of equations, using step-by-step substitution.

In Year 10, Adam tackled sketching reciprocal and cubic functions as well as exploring transformations in the number plane with guided examples.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Alex focused on calculus by practicing differentiation from first principles and applying short methods to a range of function types.

Recent Challenges

During a recent Year 7 session, a student arrived without their book, requiring the tutor to provide extra materials and adjust the lesson flow.

In Year 11 Maths, one student worked quickly but "missed transferring signs or numbers," which led to calculation errors that were only caught during review.

Another Year 12 Physics student struggled to organize written work when tackling multi-step problems; this made it harder to spot where misunderstandings occurred.

A lack of regular homework completion was also noted in several cases—one Year 9 learner was given tasks for follow-up after not bringing finished practice questions.

Recent Achievements

One Gymea tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to lose marks for sign errors now double-checks her answers without prompting, after specific feedback on number accuracy.

In a recent high school session, another student who hesitated to tackle challenge questions in trigonometry began independently attempting the tougher problems and showed real persistence before asking for help.

A primary-aged learner, previously reluctant to review her own work, has started going back through completed maths exercises to catch and fix mistakes on her own initiative—last lesson she found and corrected two calculation slips herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Miranda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Gymea Technology High School.
