I believe that a safe and welcoming learning environment is more important as it ensures a student will get the most out of their learning experience. If there is an environment which welcomes questions and challenging areas which an individual may be less comfortable with, it can assist one with reaching their full potential and making learning…

To be able to display a sense of confidence in the area/subject you are teaching, as students tend to mirror your confidence when learning as well, having a positive impact on their performance and overall wellbeing. Being friendly is also important as students can often be shy in asking questions and talking to tutors. Showing them that there is…

I believe a tutor is a person who is there to support, guide and encourage students to not just settle for an easy answer but question and discover new things. I believe tutors should allow students to embrace their mistakes and learn from them, and use their failures as experiences. I try different methods with students who are unable to grasp a…

The most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence. Once a student believes they can understand something, everything else becomes easier. That starts with creating a positive environment where they feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes without pressure. Equally important is adapting to how each student learns.…

Being understanding, confident and respectful are key aspects in a tutor- student relationship. These three qualities ensure the reliability and integrity of the tutor. I also believe that showing my students I'm not always right is a good skill to teach (mostly these mistakes are unintentional). It is the manner in which one amends one's mistakes…

I think the most important thing a tutor should do is understand the learning pattern and style of the student. Every student learns differently, simply using one method is not enough. As I try to see, I try to understand how different students learn and understand different content. Through the process, i try to find what is the most optimal way…

To improve a student’s level of knowledge. To help him when there is a misconception, or failure to conceptualize. To teach him methodologies and skills of study. I think the most important thing is making sure that you understand the student well as not everyone starts at the same level and not everyone way of learning is the same. I personally consider the interactive and "adaptive" aspects of being a tutor to be the most important things a tutor can do for their student. In my opinion, keeping the student engaged, such as through mini breaks or games between long sessions of work, is the most effective way of teaching them in a fun, yet informative manner. Moreover, being…

The most important thing a tutor can do is adjust their teaching methods and style based on each student. Teaching with only one style and using the same methods for everyone won't work, and if you can't adjust, your sessions becomes very robotic and boring. I find it important for students to know and feel that their individual needs are heard, understood and attended to. It would be most important to follow through all plans, tailored to their needs, with actions that allow the students to realise their progress. By also validating their strengths and identifying their self-limiting beliefs, I…

Local Reviews

I am extremely pleased with EzyMath Tutoring. My daughter needed a few tutorials to brush up on her maths going into Year 7. Her tutor, Sam Wise, is an excellent tutor. He is very easy going and patient. Sam taught Jemma with care and patience and made everything easy for her to understand. I would recommend EzyMaths to any parent whose child needs any type of maths tutoring, whether it be basic or advanced. Thankyou EzyMath and Sam!

Inside HallamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Zoe worked through the Pythagoras theorem, applying it to solve right-angled triangle problems, and practised calculating areas and volumes of cylinders and cones.

For Year 10, Jay revised algebra skills by expanding and simplifying equations before tackling more complex quadratic expressions with fractions and multiple variables.

In VCE Chemistry, Priya solved galvanic cell questions using half-cell diagrams and calculations, then completed volumetric analysis exercises involving titration steps and related maths.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student often handed in homework incomplete, such as submitting only an introduction and one body paragraph for a full essay task; as noted, "had a week to complete one essay, only wrote introduction and one body paragraph."

In Year 11 English, another student did not edit thoroughly—errors that could have been fixed on review remained in the final submission.

For a Year 9 analysis task, paragraphs lacked evidence and depth because annotation during reading was unclear, making it difficult to structure strong responses later.

These process gaps led to last-minute scrambles and underdeveloped written work.

Recent Achievements

One Hallam tutor noticed a Year 11 student who'd struggled with independent problem-solving now working through equations entirely on his own by the end of their session.

In English, a Year 9 student who previously missed deadlines finished her creative writing homework early and made fewer grammar mistakes than before.

A younger primary student, new to tackling spelling tests, showed clear progress—scoring higher this week and correctly identifying tricky words that had caused trouble in earlier lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bunjil Place Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hallam Secondary College.
