Clarifying even the trivial of the doubts that the student possess maybe the biggest responsibility of the tutor. The tutor must assess a method to deliver the content to them. Patience and evaluating a discrete method for each of the individuals are the two most important characteristics a tutor must flaunt. The tutor must be able to teach in a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is to encourage him/her to pursue a career in their liking and to empathise with their difficulties and teach them how to overcome them. It is also of utmost importance that a tutor must lower themselves to their understanding to teach a student. Passion to teach and a drive to progress as an…

I think the most important is to be supportive, from experience the reason that most people struggle with learning is because they give up or don’t think they can. Hence encouragement is key and positive re-enforcement. I also believe that making the student comfortable around you and going through source material in an efficient manner can make…

Listen. Support. Clarify. Seek expert advice if needed. Build confidence. Empower. If a student has requested (or their teaching team has seen fit to find) a tutor, then there must be some perceived need or reason to address. I continually check comprehension. I try different avenues to aid understanding. I will only progress levels of difficulty…

A tutor needs to be understanding and try in their planning and teaching to meet the specific needs of their tutee. This means giving appropriate difficulty work, keeping the pace manageable and overall keep the tutee feeling good about their progress. I think my strengths include patience and adaptiveness. I think its really important to be able…

To let the student understand the mechanism or logic behind the problem, not simply solving the question he/she is facing. To be able to teach the ability of solving problems, not merely providing solutions to the questions. Once as a bilingual international student, I was not only once the role or student and tutor. I started learning English at…

Establishing their fundamentals of concepts before moving on to content that is derived from said concepts. Additionally, also exposing them to questions that really make the subject interesting. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is be a student's number one supporter. School fills you with enough doubt as is, so it is imperative to create a safe learning environment for them to make mistakes in order to grow. This goes hand in hand with being a role model whom they can be inspired & motivated by and look up to. I believe…

Make them feel comfortable and wanting to do work. Ever since growing up, I personally always found praise to work far better than punishment. I believe acknowledging students for their efforts and their achievement not only gives the student confidence, but it makes the student confident in the tutor- knowing they're in the right direction. I…

The infulcence tutors have on a child's life is the most important thing in my opinion. If tutors leave a positive impact, get invivoled with kids on a very personal level, I strongly believe it would help in getting the kids to be more interested in studying and doing their homeworks. This means making tutoring fun. I believe, I have good…

Inside HawthornTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Emily worked on fraction operations and consolidating her multiplication tables, using hands-on practice for both.

In Year 10, Matt focused on embedding quotes effectively in English essays about 'The Golden Age' and practiced planning analytical responses to prompts using graphic organisers.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sam tackled quadratic equations by completing the square and applied the elimination method to solve simultaneous equations, also revisiting basic trigonometry concepts like SOH CAH TOA.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student showed inconsistent completion of assigned homework for English SAC revision, which limited the depth of written feedback and skill consolidation; as a tutor noted, "Matt needs to improve completing his assigned homework tasks."

In VCE English, reliance on brief plans rather than detailed mindmaps or highlighting led to weaker essay introductions and difficulty embedding evidence.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 maths student struggled with structuring working in fraction questions—"more practice is needed on fractions," the notes recorded—which slowed progress and sometimes hid small calculation errors.

Missed homework meant extra class time spent reviewing old ground instead of advancing skills.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Hawthorn noticed that Matt, a Year 11 English student, now completes all assigned homework ahead of lessons and brings thoughtful ideas to each session. He's even started using planning tables and flash cards on his own, which wasn't the case before.

In senior maths, Will has become much more independent with graphing linear relations; he used to need step-by-step support but recently translated equations into graphs without prompting.

Meanwhile, Ziggy (Year 8) showed a big shift by reading scenes from a play aloud with expression and then volunteering his interpretation of the characters' motives.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Boroondara Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hawthorn West Primary School.
