The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to have faith and empathy for the one they are teaching. This is because only through empathy can they identify what the student needs to improve on. Through faith, the student will have the courage to learn and strive for consistency and a harmonious relationship between teacher and…

In fact, I grew up having a few tutors but found that they all lacked one thing - constant support. I feel a tutor should always make themselves available to assist their students outside of class hours. I also feel that tutors should never appear intimidating to their students. I am the lead altar server at my church, and all current younger…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen to them. The ability to listen and understand the student's needs is the most essential part. Also, setting homework and encouraging the student is the next essential part to helping a student. My strengths as a tutor are my compassionate and hardworking nature. My…

The most important thing a tutor can do is understand the problems a particular student is facing. Each student might have a different way of thinking and different problems. The tutor needs to figure out the best method for the student so that s/he can learn the most. The tutor needs to clearly explain the concepts and then needs to ensure that…

Tutors should be a friendly guiding figure that the student feels that they can approach at any time for assistance. As a tutor, the best thing that I can give to a student is the confidence for them to feel that they can achieve greater and better things. A tutor can also inspire a student to be like them, a positive role model that helps shape…

A tutor shouldn't be the individual who would only be associated with studies and stuff. Moreover, a tutor should be a guiding light to the student. - Communication - Experience -…

I believe that understanding is the most important thing a tutor must do for a student. I am currently…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give them a sense of confidence when they return the classroom after having something explained to them in a way they can understand. Inside HeathertonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Zara focused on solving linear equations with brackets and pronumerals on both sides, as well as using the elimination method for simultaneous equations.

In Year 9, Sam worked through applications of Pythagoras' theorem in real-world scenarios and learned how to find unknown side lengths in trigonometry by rearranging formulas.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Ethan practised adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions—including negatives—and used stem-and-leaf plots to organise data visually.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly relied on written notes rather than practicing applying concepts to new types of probability and algebra questions, leading to hesitation when unfamiliar wording appeared.

In Year 10, a student used their cheat sheet but struggled to identify which formulas or diagrams matched the question during open-note assessments; as noted, "she needs to practice more on which information/diagrams relates to the questions."

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student avoided showing full working out in ratio simplification tasks—skipping lines meant errors went unnoticed until answers were checked. This pattern left confusion during revision and increased stress before tests.

Recent Achievements

A Heatherton tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to wait for hints, but now works through tricky algebra questions step by step before asking for help.

In another session, a Year 7 student who often rushed and guessed at maths problems started taking time to read each question carefully and checked her answers on her own.

Meanwhile, in Year 12 English, one student who struggled with essay planning has begun outlining her arguments independently before writing—she finished last lesson's outline without any prompts from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clarinda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Christway College.
