Maximize their potential for learning and increase their awareness of their own strengths by creating a conducive learning environment (i.e. strength-based approach, encouragement, inquiry-based learning, one-on-one teaching and learning). All these would allow students to gain better understanding of the subjects or theories in a more in-depth…

First of all, we need to build a relationship with the learner, assess where he/she is in relation to the topic and adapt the lesson to meet his/her needs. I am able to find different ways to teach a particular topic and I am a lifelong learner myself. I will always look at educational research to see what approaches works in the particular domain…

I consider patience to be the most important quality a tutor can have for a student. I believe a tutor should guide rather than give the answers straight away. A tutor should be able to set a good example and inspire motivation. I have always enjoyed mathematics and teaching mathematics. I studied math B (standard level mathematics) and math C…

Never get angry at a student for asking the same question repeatedly. They are asking because we have not done a good enough job in explaining to them. So we must be patient and ensure we explain as clear as possible. It also very important for a tutor to encourage and motivate students. Sometimes students say they want to give up but we must…

A tutor plays a very important role in a student's life. A good teacher can put a life long impact on the growth and personality of a student. A tutor can be an inspiration to the student and always be there for him or her not only during the course but even after the course as a mentor for life. My strengths are my ability to explain concepts in…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to help them become more independent and confident with the subject material. If a tutor can encourage students when they are finding the problems difficult and explain the material to them so they can consolidate and establish the skills so they could teach it to others, then I think the…

As for me, the most crucial thing should be improving their academic performances while arousing their interest in studying. To be specific, these are what I consider responsible tutorial behaviors. 1. Do sufficient pre-class preparation and make notes for every key point that you are going to talk about in detail. 2. Be patient in class. Think…

I personally think that the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to explain any concepts of certain subjects in the most comprehensive way for the student to understand and try to bring out the inner passion of the student towards the subject. A tutor must understand a student first. I also think making a lively session and lightening up the session helps release stress and increase the grasping power of students. A tutor must be a friend and a teacher so that the student is free to express difficulties if there are any. I think I can make understand a concept to a person in the way…

A tutor needs to not only ensure that students get good grades, for me personally, it is equally important to boost each student's problem solving skills and creativity.…

In my view the most important contribution of a tutor is helping her student do well academically as well as in personal and professional life. It is not just about the concepts but also their practical implications and applications. In my view I have always been a good teacher to my students. Lucky enough to make a difference in their lives. My…

In addition to helping students understand why and how things are done, mentors must also encourage and be patient with students while they are in the process of achieving. A good tutor should also be capable of viewing things from the student's perspective in order to better understand the student's view on a particular matter and potential…

Just being patient and understanding, giving time and attention with younger kids and respect with older ones. I think that's the best way to help them. I am quite patient so when a student finds it difficult, then I am willing to sit down and spend a lot of time on something until they get it. I am also good at showing multiple ways to solve each…

I acknowledge that passing on knowledge such as how to use Pythagoras is important, I would love to inspire students to love learning and being creative in the way that approaches a math issue. When students grow up, it is not the quadratic equations or math problems that helps them to thrive in higher education and life, but it is the ability to…

I feel teaching a student to critically think, while also developing their inner skill that seperates them for everyone else is a purpose I am very dedicated to. I believe the most important thing a tutor must do for a student is to really take time to listen to and understand the areas that they are struggling with so that they are not giving up valuable out of school time and not making progress - I firmly believe that play and rest is just as important as studying and working when you are a primary and…

Inside HeathertonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Zara focused on solving linear equations with brackets and pronumerals on both sides, as well as using the elimination method for simultaneous equations.

In Year 9, Sam worked through applications of Pythagoras' theorem in real-world scenarios and learned how to find unknown side lengths in trigonometry by rearranging formulas.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Ethan practised adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions—including negatives—and used stem-and-leaf plots to organise data visually.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly relied on written notes rather than practicing applying concepts to new types of probability and algebra questions, leading to hesitation when unfamiliar wording appeared.

In Year 10, a student used their cheat sheet but struggled to identify which formulas or diagrams matched the question during open-note assessments; as noted, "she needs to practice more on which information/diagrams relates to the questions."

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student avoided showing full working out in ratio simplification tasks—skipping lines meant errors went unnoticed until answers were checked. This pattern left confusion during revision and increased stress before tests.

Recent Achievements

A Heatherton tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to wait for hints, but now works through tricky algebra questions step by step before asking for help.

In another session, a Year 7 student who often rushed and guessed at maths problems started taking time to read each question carefully and checked her answers on her own.

Meanwhile, in Year 12 English, one student who struggled with essay planning has begun outlining her arguments independently before writing—she finished last lesson's outline without any prompts from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clarinda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Christway College.
