Foremost, an english tutor should help their student to identify and reach their goals. Knowing what is important to the student and incorporating that into the metrics for success will help them feel like they are making progress. And secondly, tutors should help the student to form good habits; as motivation can only take one so far,…

For a student, an english tutor can guide them to the right path and be considerate of their views. Being attentive and respectful to their students is another important thing that every tutor must have. I am very patient which is a quality every tutor must have. I listen and understand to the student's questions carefully to help them out. I…

First of all, teach and guide them. I understand that children know their academics, they just need a guide to show them the right way of approaching these questions. I love math so I love teaching math and I hope I can impart my love for mathematics in my students too. I have been tutoring for a long time so I can say I do have quite a bit of…

A tutor needs to be able to clearly communicate with the student with their studies. There is little meaning if tutors do nut put in the effort to understand how the students think when they're studying. I have had experience in informal tutoring during high school. With clarity and great cohesion I was able to teach younger students how to…

I think as an english tutor, support is the most important thing we can do to students. This can be educational support, but also when a student is struggling emotionally or finding it challenging to navigate through work, I think as tutors we should also help the student in need. Obviously, we are not responsible for every burden the student…

The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to help them build small skills which they are able to use in their lives. For example, helping a student open up means that they have developed that skill which will help them to open up to their teachers perhaps at school etc. I believe that the role of a teacher is to help…

A tutor is someone that helps students with their academic studies so that they get a better understanding of the subject .So for example, for biology subject ,an english tutor needs to explain the concept rather then helping them reciting the subject without understanding. When students grasp the concept of the subject ,they are less likely to…

I believe the most important things an english tutor can do is listen. It goes a long way especially when establishing a good bond with your client and ensures they feel seen and heard. In addition, I also think its important to be empathetic as it strengthens communication further. I think my strengths as a tutor is being able to communicate with…

Just being patient and understanding, giving time and attention with younger kids and respect with older ones. I think that's the best way to help them. I am quite patient so when a student finds it difficult, then I am willing to sit down and spend a lot of time on something until they get it. I am also good at showing multiple ways to solve each…

I think the most important thing, is that you not only teach students. You learn to grow with them, you make sure that your students are able to be successful, and you are a small contributor to that success, but along the way, you grow with them, you understand the way they learn, so that you could learn with them. I think that my strengths, are…

It sounds basic but it is a common error made by tutors. Making sure that the student understands more than just how to solve the problem. That they understand the underlying concepts behind every problems they do. Even if they do not wish to pursue the field in the future, understanding the concepts will give them the confidence to approach all…

I believe critical thinking is the most important skill that an english tutor can bring to a student, since I think the responsibility of a tutor is to lead and motivate a student to complete their school tasks by themselves, rather than depending on help from a tutor. A tutor should also provide adequate solutions for different students. As I…

Answering the questions a student asks as they only ask if they truly do not understand a particular part and as an english tutor its our duty to make them understand. A key for tutoring is to have patience to guide someone no matter how slow a person understands the particular subject and I do have that key. Plus, I would take the responsibility…

A tutor must be adaptable and proactive. They must observe a student's progress and deduce what method they learn best and adjust their teaching accordingly. What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, encourage independent thinking, and create a safe and supportive environment for learning. A tutor’s role isn’t just to provide the right answers, but to help the student understand the reasoning behind them. It’s also important to…

Inside HuntingdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Dylan worked on factorisation and tackled index laws within Year 9 algebra, using "talking aloud" strategies to clarify his thinking.

Another Year 9 student revised solving linear equations and explored the difference between rational, terminating, recurring, and irrational numbers.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Alice practiced converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and calculated percentage change and error in everyday contexts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 Algebra, skipping written steps led to frequent calculation errors—one tutor noted, "lots of middleman equations left out, which arises silly mistakes in the workings."

In senior factorisation work, missed steps undermined confidence and made it harder to spot where errors crept in.

A Year 11 student's effort with an algebra worksheet was positive, but incomplete homework limited progress between sessions.

In upper primary maths, a reluctance to write working or lay out calculations clearly made fraction and decimal problems tougher than necessary; messy setout forced extra time fixing alignment rather than understanding new methods.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Huntingdale noticed one high school student began tackling harder test questions independently, using graphs to work through the tough ones—something she'd hesitated with before.

Another older student, who previously rushed through maths problems, now takes time to set out every step clearly and double-checks answers for accuracy, showing real care in her process.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student made a breakthrough by finally understanding fractions after struggling for weeks; she was able to solve nearly all of the fraction questions correctly during their last session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oakleigh Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Huntingdale Primary School.
