I believe a good tutor is making the student understand what they are learning but not how to get good result in their exam. Base of my past experience in attending tuition, my tutors tend to explain mathematics theorem in detail so we could understand them better and not only just to memorise when to use the formula. Also I believe practice makes…

I believe a tutor's role goes beyond helping students achieve good grades. A great tutor should create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, help them develop effective study habits and problem-solving skills, and build the confidence to learn independently. Ultimately, the goal is to equip students with skills…

Tutoring is about building a relationship with the student based on trust and respect, making the student feel comfortable enough to ask questions, express their concerns and doubts, which was a key aspect for me when I was learning. Over time, I have learnt that my enthusiasm for the subject is contagious, it kindles a love for the subject in the…

I think it is important for tutors to show patience and understanding towards students. It can be frustrating when one struggles to understand a new concept and I want to ensure that the student finds enjoyment in their work rather than a sense of dread toward it. Therefore, I highly emphasize an approach of patience to foster safe and enjoyable…

The most important thing as a tutor is to realise that you yourself is also learning, and you should not place yourself as a superior. As a tutor, yes you have the knowledge and your job is to teach that knowledge to your student - yet this is not an invitation to feel superior. As a tutor, you are there to guide them not dictate them. At the end…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is tutoring them not only to make them get the answer, but helping them to understand about the material and helping them to have a good study habit. I usually teach sistematically starting from explaining the material, giving example and how to answer, and then giving practice for students to…

A great tutor doesn’t just give answers but helps students work through problems on their own. It’s also important to create a welcoming environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes…

I believe a tutor has to make sure that students fully understand the material they are learning so that they can apply what they learn and ultimately be able to do the more difficult questions by themselves. With constant practice and drilling, students will be more comfortable doing the questions themselves and be confident in the…

The most important aspect of a tutor is able to communicate clearly to students. Not only that we need to be knowledgeable, we also need to be able to support with younger students who have hard time solving problems. Building their confidence first. A student who believes they can improve will put in the effort. Beyond that, teach them how to think through problems independently so they don't need you forever. And really listen to where they're struggling because what a student says they don't understand and what they actually don't understand are often two…

Bring them self-confidence. Because as a former student, this is the most important thing I got from my tutor. Students who take tuition often do so because they lack confidence in their grades, or even receive pressure from others such as parents, and so can become agitated or even bored with their studies, and thus engage in self-denial. If you…

A tutor needs to be patient and build a healthy learning curve. One of the most important things for a tutor is to be encouraging and positive. Negativity can lead to resentment towards a subject and deflect the student from making a genuine effort to learn. A tutor also needs to be well-versed with the material so they can teach the student as…

Fostering Understanding: One of the most important things I…

I believe the most important thing a tutor may do is to grow the student's confidence. Letting them know they can do better than what they are doing, discovering their maximum potential. I think one of my biggest strengths as a tutor is that I’m patient. I understand that everyone learns at a different pace, and I don’t get frustrated if…

I believe that tutors need to be: 1. Honest as this helps to establish rapport and trust 2. Flexible as this means being willing to adjust techniques and approaches to meet the learning styles of the students 3. Be patient as learn not to show annoyance in your speech or body language 4. Be good listener as learn to pick up clues in your…

I think a teacher should understand the student and try to explain in such a way in which he can not only understand the concept but also enjoy it. I believe a tutor can impact student's lives by providing the foundation he needs for further studies. A student with a poor concept might some how pass but he will struggle in the future, or looses interest in that subject. Hence a tutor can strengthen that foundation, at the same time be a source of motivation and a be a big brother. My main…

My son has recently started maths tutoring. His tutor is great and has helped my son to improve quickly. We're currently doing the tutoring online during the pandemic which is working really well. Highly recommended.

Inside Hurlstone ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ivy focused on revising operations with positive and negative numbers and addition of fractions with different denominators, including converting improper fractions to mixed numerals.

In Year 8, Lewis tackled trigonometric ratios for finding unknown side lengths in right-angled triangles and worked through index laws using examples from a recent test.

For Year 9, sessions included expanding and factorising algebraic expressions using the distributive law and working through financial mathematics topics such as simple interest and depreciation.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student, when working on trigonometry, often avoided writing out steps for rearranging equations—"he tries to solve it in his head and skips lines," a tutor observed. This made small errors hard to find, especially with negative numbers.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner struggled with times tables and would hesitate before attempting more complex fraction problems; forgotten multiplication facts slowed her progress on simplifying fractions.

In Year 10 financial maths, one student left questions incomplete because they were unsure whether to calculate interest or total amounts—this uncertainty led to confusion during timed tests.

Recent Achievements

A Hurlstone Park tutor recently noticed Lewis, a high school student, catching and correcting his own errors while working through complex algebraic expressions—a big shift from earlier sessions where he'd wait for hints.

Another highlight came when Ruby, also in high school, confidently explained how different transformations affect the sketching of parabolas and interpreted Venn diagrams with minimal guidance after previously needing step-by-step support.

For a younger student, Ivy's willingness to ask clarifying questions during her lesson stood out; she used to quietly move on if she was unsure but now actively seeks understanding before continuing.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Emanuel Tsardoulias Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Paul of the Cross Catholic Primary School.
