Make them love the materials he is delivering and encourage them to explore their potential. Furthermore, make students feel that he is there to educate them and not to punish and impose stuff on them. Being studious, passionate, well-educated and having the required qualifications to master the materials I'm delivering and having discipline over…

Making sure that the student is comfortable and not to push them so soon into the problems and questions - ease them into the subject. If they are already "good" at the subject, then it comes down to being there to cultivate their skill with them. Ensuring the students understand first, then applying the fundamentals. I am a big advocate for…

The most important thing I can do for a student is support them in a way that suits how they learn best. Every student is different, so I focus on adapting my explanations and pace to what works for them. I aim to build good learning habits by helping students organise their thinking, approach problems with structure, and develop strategies they…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is create lessons around a student's skillset and ability. If they are struggling with a certain topic, I like to focus my attention on this area in my lesson so they may be able to get a better understanding. I believe one of my strengths is being able to explain a concept in different ways so that…

Ensuring that students aren't afraid to ask for help. It's vital that tutors reinforce the fact that we are there to help them and won't care at all if they make mistakes and that it's a necessary part of the learning process. This not only helps build a sense of rapport with the student, but it promotes efficient and effective learning. I think…

I have experienced firsthand the difference a tutor can make on a child's enthusiasm and engagement with a subject, and I want to pass that onto the next generation of kids. This passion, I think, is the most important thing a tutor or any teacher can give to their student, because it opens their eyes to the complexity and beauty of the subject-…

Above all, I believe it is the moral support and social relationship as a mentor for the student. In other words, to provide them with attention and assistance that they otherwise would not benefit from in a classroom setting where there are lots of other students for one teacher. I believe in helping students achieve their own best, no matter…

A tutor can always assist a student to help understand all of their basic structural and systematic questions and problems. Also a tutor's guidance should inspire the student to work with dedication. What a tutor should and need to do are guiding a child to enhance their strengths and improve their weaknesses with all of the power invested in ourselves; reminding and figuring out what their barriers are to success (such as are they afraid of they can't pass? or they are not receiving any support from their beloved ones?). In my power, I'd do…

Guidance. It's always guidance. One of the most important things is to putting in effort to prioritise student's learning and personal needs. I'd like to highly recommend Dwight to any other families. His kind and patient demeanor translate into a great tutor. He's been very helpful. My daughter just got her results from her Algebra test which Dwight had to catch her up on as that's one of the topics she missed. She got 93%. Great result and proof of Dwights great tutoring.

Inside Keilor LodgeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Leah focused on financial mathematics, including compound interest and reducing balance loans, applying formulas with a financial calculator.

In Year 10, Evangeline worked through trigonometry—using Sine and Cosine Rules and interpreting trig graphs—and practised unit circle concepts.

For Year 12, Sam tackled networks and graphs, exploring chapter content such as shortest paths and network matrices using step-by-step diagrams to reinforce understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student arrived without her exercise book, making it hard to track progress or review past learning—as a tutor noted, it was difficult to determine what she had learned.

In Year 10 algebra, one student struggled with note-taking and often left equations incomplete; messy notes led to repeated confusion during revision.

Another senior student in probability entered sessions unprepared, having forgotten both textbook and basic materials like pen and paper. This lack of organization meant lesson time was spent improvising rather than building skills. The result: avoidable frustration when trying to connect new concepts with earlier work.

Recent Achievements

One Keilor Lodge tutor noticed a high school student, Kristian, take real initiative by asking to revisit tricky maths topics and then completing all his assigned homework—a big shift from relying on prompts in earlier sessions.

In another recent session, Leah (also high school) began trying out new problem-solving methods herself rather than waiting for step-by-step guidance; she even tackled unfamiliar material using these strategies.

Meanwhile, a younger student, Evangeline, started creating her own summary sheets before tests and now writes more detailed notes without being prompted—something she hesitated to do just weeks ago.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sydenham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Catholic Regional College North Keilor.
