The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build confidence and self-esteem. Often, people feel discouraged or left out when unable to keep up with their class. They become withdrawn and tend not to believe in their capabilities. By teaching a student challenging topics, I am simultaneously quelling all notions of…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is identify exactly where a student is struggling and provide targeted support. Unlike a large classroom setting, tutoring offers the opportunity to focus on an individual student's specific confusions. By filling in missing pieces of knowledge and helping students see how different…

While tutoring sessions are helpful, students also need to develop independent study skills, which I aim to encourage and motivate. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make themselves welcoming. A good and effective tutor is open to all ideas and willing to completely work with the student. The most effective tutors will offer a variety of perspectives and welcome all criticism and differing opinions. During school, I struggled with breaking down tasks,…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build a student’s understanding, confidence, and independence. In my opinion the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them reach their goals. I believe empowerment is one single most important aspects a tutor can bring to a student's live. I have oftentimes seen students who are lost and have almost given up on their desire to learn a new topic. In these situations, it is crucial to approach such students with a massive smile on your face and listen to their issues and expectations in…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student go beyond just teaching content. A tutor should help a child feel capable--- when students believe in themselves, everything else becomes easier. It's important to break concepts down simply, meet students where they are, and help them move forward step by step without overwhelm.…

I think there are a lot of qualities that go into being a good tutor. Some of the most essential ingredients are to be compassionate and build rapport . You must be adaptable, and change according to how each student acts since every individual is very distinct, this will help cater to their differences (such as learning speed). Build their confidence as much as their knowledge because a lot of students struggle not because they are incapable, but because they are convinced themselves they can’t do it. Beyond that, I think it’s important to teach a student how to think through a problem rather than just giving them the answer. The goal is to make them capable enough…

Inside KensingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Max practised addition and subtraction with four-digit numbers and explored algebra through interactive games, while also tackling a NAPLAN reading comprehension task.

Year 7 student Reuben worked on expanding brackets and simplifying algebraic expressions by grouping like terms, as well as reviewing more challenging homework problems.

For Year 8, Ella focused on solving equations with x-terms on both sides—including those resulting in fractional answers—and consolidated her understanding of index laws during the session.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student often avoided writing out steps, choosing to solve equations mentally—"he was very fluent with the calculator," as a tutor observed, but over-reliance on it led to small errors and missed working in homework.

In Year 10 trigonometry, skipping units and failing to show sketches meant lost marks even when answers were correct.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner resisted tackling long division unless fully confident; this hesitation slowed progress in new maths topics.

In senior chemistry, back-checking sometimes turned into cosmetic correction rather than real error analysis, leaving calculation slips unresolved before tests.

Recent Achievements

A Kensington tutor recently noticed a big shift in Max's attitude toward reading—where he once dreaded reading aloud and froze up at mistakes, he now brings his own book to sessions and reads enthusiastically, even when he stumbles.

In high school maths, Reuben has started tackling challenging algebraic equations with less hesitation; after struggling with factorisation early on, he now solves GCF problems—even tricky ones—in a single lesson.

William also made a breakthrough in geometry by quickly recalling SOH CAH TOA rules for right-angled triangles and correctly identifying triangle sides without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Green Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kensington Public School.
