Being understanding of students' learning experiences; whether it is confident about the topic or frustrated and disappointed when they don't yet "get it", the perspective helps me more likely able to keep a student's learning energy alive, thus more efficiently helping them. Though unfortunate, it is understandable and very human to easily…

Help them actually understand the material, not just get the right answer that one time. Keep their confidence up so they don't start believing they're just bad at the subject. And honestly, work myself out of a job a little, teach them habits they can use on their own instead of making them rely on you. I'm patient, I'll explain something three…

The most important thing a tutor can do would be to be patient enough to go over and over the topics until the student fully grasps all the concepts and not rushing through the topics. My strength would be to simplify and present matter in an interactive and easily understandable manner and make sure the students understand the finer concepts of…

Try make tutoring fun, students no matter how hard you try will not retain information and be willing to learn if they are really against it. So by presenting the content in a fun but still effective manner, it is bound to show results. The most important thing when it comes to content is to not spoon feed them with the right answers, you need…

Giving confidence to the student is the most important thing. If the student is not confident in their ability to do the task, then they will believe that they can not and will not try. Understanding the frustrations that the student can have because they don't understand something, staying calm and patiently taking the student through the problem…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to instil confidence and independent problem-solving skills in their students. It is also crucial to provide continuous encouragement and tailor teaching strategies to individual learning needs. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is create a space where the student feels completely comfortable being themselves. They should be able to openly say what they do and don’t understand without fear of judgment. This honesty is what allows us to help them in the best way possible. Beyond that, a tutor should always aim to build…

Build real understanding rather than memorisation, and build the student's confidence alongside it. My personal measure of whether a student has actually learned something is whether they could turn around and explain it to someone else. A tutor can change the approach of a student towards a subject- from pessimism to optimism, and make him/her excel in that subject. Understanding- so if a topic is not well understood by the student, I can explain again with a different approach so that the student understands the concept clearly. Patience- I am patient with weak/slow learners,…

Inside KewTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Annie revised linear equations and explored polynomials and real functions, using worked examples to clarify each step.

In Year 9, Lenny tackled trigonometry concepts with a focus on SOH CAH TOA and also reviewed past tests covering linear equations.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Ethan practiced times tables (3s and 4s) alongside school homework on multiplication, supporting accuracy through repeated exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Chemistry, a student's stress during tests led to misreading questions and answering incorrectly—"she misread the condition or questions, hence wrote down the wrong answer." She was encouraged to highlight key words and practice under timed conditions.

In Year 9 Maths, messy or incomplete working made isolating variables in equations harder; a tutor noted that neater layout would help track steps for midpoint and distance tasks.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student hesitated to show written working in mixed fraction subtraction due to fear of mistakes, which slowed improvement and left gaps when reviewing errors together.

Recent Achievements

A Kew tutor noticed that a Year 10 student, after previously relying heavily on step-by-step guidance, now solves simultaneous equations using the elimination method with much more independence and even asks for extra practice when unsure.

In senior Chemistry, another high schooler who used to hesitate with equilibrium questions is now confidently tackling harder examples and did especially well on their first SAC, showing clear improvement since last term.

Meanwhile, in primary maths, Annie moved from needing help with multiplying and dividing fractions to gradually answering these on her own by the end of the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kew Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kew Primary School.
